Mam I m not a defence expert, my comments are as layman but all NATO nations has bigger economy n better HDI indicator n some of allies had even ruled various parts of globe .... You gave me two examples where India has some military bases but why India wanted to have base in west indies coast where we don't have any interest foreseeable future....

Indian Air Force has a squadron in Tajikistan and Indian govt. was finalizing terms with Mauritanian govt to have an airbase there. As India grows economically, Indian interests will not be confined to her geography only but will include business partners and Indian diaspora. Indian diaspora were driven away from Africa. They were more than 50% in Fiji now forced to be reduced to about 40%. Respect to PIOs and India is interlinked. After Look East and Act East policy the next will be Latin America and Africa.

There was a plan to deploy a squad of MiG-29 in Fakhor AFB, but that never materialize after 2001 US invasion.

There were talks with Mauritanian govt. to provide air base for Indian Air Force. I dont know the outcome and not much is available on internet. If you are shocked that India is having defence pacts with muslim nations then please google about indian navy providing naval security to Qatar, Oman providing naval bases to India, India training Oman Armed forces, Iran to provide Chabahar port to India, Tajikistan providing an airbase to Indian Air Force.. and all these nations are muslim majority nations.

We have no base other than Farkhor, even Farkhor is hospital base established for Norther Alliance fighters, not a military base, and no MiG-29 is deployed there.

We will look at latin America as a whole for business. We also have sizeable PIOs in Surinam and West Indies that are part of latin america. the type of govt a nation has its her internal issue. India has good relations with democracies, communists, kingdoms and dictatorships. Thers are ample growth opportunities in Africa and there is good number of Indian businessmen. Also India has acquired huge tracts of land on lease in african nations for agriculture. That will explain India's interests in these regions.

India has very very good relations with Tajikistan. India sided with Tajiks in Pashtun-Tajik war. Also they are Soviet muslims, not of fanatical variety.

Oman is neither Shia, nor Sunni. It is ibadi and had better relation with India then it had with a lot of Muslim countries.
