Survival in 20 thousand rupees a month

I pay my driver 15K for 6 hours of work per day (9am to 3pm). He now wants 25K. I understand his needs but he works 6 hours a day and normally drivers work 12 hours a day and get 25K.
What to do?

One of the things to consider is his opportunity to earn. If he's working for you 9am-3pm, how does this impact his ability to work 12 hours?

Ultimately you can only do what your pocket allows.

15K is good pay. But ofcourse it depends on how many mileage he does a day.
Actually the work load is moderate at best

I think I'll offer him 20K. I don't want to be very harsh under the current circumstances 😞

Is that his monthly salary? Does he not have any other job? I'm just curious.

Glad you asked. He wants me to purchase a Rickshaw for him so that he can work after 3pm for additional income. He wants me to deduct 10K per month from his driver salary to adjust the loan/purchase!

If you can afford too, that would be a great help for him. Have you suggested he tries food panda or something like that? Migh be cheaper, and that way he could work the busy evening shift. idk your own financial position.

Can't he apply for any of these small start up loans PTI were giving out? like Kamyab jawan or whatever? Might be worth having a look online.

I remember many years ago my first pay check from Government of Pakistan ( you know the big ornate cheques) was for a whopping 15,000 rupees, I felt like I was king of the world.

To be honest with you sir, 15,000 for a part-time driver is not a bad wage, I know security guards pulling 10 hour shifts on 12,000. That is not to say his demands are unreasonable, but still its difficult for everyone.

Sir on this depending on where he is he can get Bykea

PM me his location(City), I'll find out from my friend who is a manger if they are recruiting riders in that area. He will just need a CD70/125 and the part-time wage is pretty good, I recently got someone a job on Bykea and he gets around 15,000 working evenings doing deliveries.

Is he married?
Does his wife work?
How many kids he have?

Same here, not a government job though, but still a check of 15,000, I felt like I could do anything I wanted!

20k PKR (6.5-7 thousand Indian rupees?) isn't that low. the poorest people in India, in states like Bihar don't even have 2000-3000 rupees a month. I'm sure you can find similar conditions in Sindhi Thar.

but of course all this is extremely tragic.

Yes that's true but the cost of living difference in an Urban population centre vs rural villages is massive. I rent a few properties and have seen the market increase year upon year, what would have cost you 25,000 a month a few years ago now is on the market for around 100,000 a month.

Even small modest flats and portions are no less than 15/20k. So blue collar workers are driven out of urban areas to the outskirts of the city where rent is cheaper, this increases their travel time, cost of travelling to and from work, the fatigue it takes on the body which leads to poor physical and mental health and very poor work-life balance.

By the grace of Almighty Allah I have been fortunate to be born into a little money, but those who are on the cusp of poverty or fringes really start to feel the heat.

Long story short- a friend works in a large MNC in Islamabad and took his entire department for a meal to a popular fast food joint in the city, he invited his driver and peon for a meal too, they looked at the menu and said to him, "Excuse me sir, forgive us for saying this but could you give us the money instead, the price of that one meal will feed my house for 2 days".

That is the sad reality of our nations - when you look beyond the manicured greenbelts and posh airconditioned offices and luxury sedans carrying people with designer suits, the vast majority of people are living below the breadline.

And whose fault is that?
