I was surprised to find that many of China's cities and to a lesser extent, provinces, have already reached the 1st World and are now developed.

GDP (PPP) per capita of $18,000+ is usually the defining line between a high-income economy and a developing one.

Tianjin, Beijing, and Shanghai are already high-income economies, and Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, and Zheijang should follow in the next 2-3 years. Interestingly enough, China's poorest province (Guizhou: $4,674) is wealthier than India (GDP per capita 2012 of $3,830).

China administrative provinces 2012 GDP (PPP) per capita:

1 - Tianjin: $22,242

2 - Beijing: $20,804

3 - Shanghai: $20,313

4 - Jiangsu: $16,327

5 - Inner Mongolia: $15,365

6 - Zheijang: $15,113

7 - Liaoning: $13,508

8 - Guangdong: $12,923

9 - Fujian: $12,604

10 - Shandong: $12,366

11 - Jilin: $10,370

12 - Chongqing: $9,336

13 - Hubei: $9,215

14 - Shaanxi: $9,211

15 - Hebei: $8,739

16 - Ningxia : $8,639

17 - Heilongjiang: $8,531

18 - Xinjiang: $8,100

19 - Shanxi: $8,033

20 - Hunan: $7,998

21 - Qinghai: $7,889

22 - Hainan: $7,734

23 - Henan: $7,578

24 - Sichuan: $7,066

25 - Jiangxi: $6,880

26 - Anhui: $6,878

27 - Guangxi: $6,675

28 - Tibet: $5,479

29 - Yunnan: $5,302

30 - Gansu: $5,250

31 - Guizhou: $4,674

Still too many people left in the interior.

Also I would consider maybe 30,000 and up to be some what developed.

We can only hoped for semi developed status in another 1.5 to 2 decades. Let's not jump the gun here.

But still inner Mongolia surprised me. Doing better than "actual" mongolia. lol, should have stayed with China.

Looking at this I support Tibet independence, so one less province we need to move to developed status.

Well my own city HK has been classified as a "developed" economy for as long as I can remember.

Beijing and Tianjin are looking really good though. And the most awe-inspiring city in China is Shanghai.

The interior really is 3rd world. The East coast is obviously 1st world. Saw some pictures. Pretty cool.

$18k and up is considered developed, even though the USA is $50k and the European Union average is $32k. Basically, since it's a moving goal-line (it won't be $18k in 10 years for example; it will keep moving as the average of the world keeps moving), it's easier to say that going over 1/3 of US per capita income makes you developed.

It makes sense. Countries like Argentina, Chile, Hungary, and Poland ($18-$20k) are considered to be at the bottom end of the developed country scale. Poland is quite a beautiful country, even though they only average $20k.

Hong Kong is at our level basically. We've got a GDP per capita of $50,000 and you guys are at $52,000.

That's kind of what I have been thinking. Why should people living in east coast donate so much money through tax to support Tibet and then be demonized in international media? All the infrastructure in Tibet are built with tax from central government while they don't pay any tax. Let them go happy alone and worship Lama for eternity and then beg for international aid through their grand public stunt, the Dalai Lama. I have no special feelings towards Tibetans but I am pissed that we keep getting harassed in international media. Sorry for my frankness if this hurts sensitivity of some Chinese.

Also Inner Mongolia is like middle east, rich by selling resources, so not really developed, that's where you get those ghost cities like Ordos. Jiangsu and Zhejiang are so much more developed than Inner Mongolia. Oh no, we don't need or want Mongolia. They can sit there quietly as landlocked buffer state.

I'm just waiting for the day that the whole of China has a similar income level to my own city of Hong Kong.

The mainland is progressing faster than I had ever imagined. I feel that the major cities of China like Shanghai and Beijing are developing so fast that it wouldn't surprise me if they doubled their current income levels in a decade or so.

In fact when I visited Shanghai, I felt it was WAY more advanced than Hong Kong, it was just so impressive. And that was a few years ago as well, I can't imagine how it will look in a decade or so.

I'd like to visit one day. My brother just came back from a school trip (he's in high school); I think he went to Chengdu or something, lol I don't know. Chengdu or Chongqing. Anyway, when he came back I asked him how poor and messed up it was, and showed me pictures of what I thought was a completely different country. LOL! Quite impressive for a "poor" country.

Shenzen's GDP per capita (PPP) for 2011: $26,847

They have surpassed half of Hong Kong's per capita GDP. Does it look that way? Have you ever been?

Cities like Shanghai and Beijing are easy. It's the interior that's the *****. But I feel the government is doing deals like the port and road deal with Pakistan as well as the energy deal with Russia that will help the interior develop a lot better.

Having one or two cities be top of the line is easy, I'm sure even the NK capital is better than some other places, but to pull the worst places out of poverty and into international standard is the mark of a developed country.

I'm sure Indian major cities are also quite developed relatively speaking.

I go to Shenzhen all the time, it's right next to HK.

Shenzhen is great, it's a bit like Hong Kong but at a slightly earlier stage of development.

China's major cities double their GDP at least every decade, so in a decade we might see Shenzhen having an income level the same as HK.

Hungary and Poland, maybe, I haven't seen pictures from their average cities, but Argentina and Chile are considered developed when they have so much slums in cities? I would rather live in our poorest Guizhou province than a city in Chile. GPD can only be a guidance to judge a country or province's development, but not really conclusive evidence.

I actually looked it up. Delhi, for example, has a GDP (PPP) per capita around $8,000 or $9,000. I calculated it myself, so it could be slightly inaccurate. This is basically still lower than China's 2012 average ($9,200).

I'd be interested to hear from the Indian members as to their best cities.

Chengdu is capitol of Sichuan province, bordering Tibet and Yunan, like really really inner land, lol. Chongqing used to be part of Sichuan province and was carved out as its own municipality several years ago, cannot remember when.

It's not conclusive evidence, but it's one of the best indicators, especially adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP).

Look at Chile and Argentina. They are considered to be fully developed by the Human Development Index.

Where are the pandas? I was thinking it's Chengdu. He flew into Beijing, said the airport is much better than our piece of utter sh!t one here in New York, and from there he flew inland.

Pandas are in Sichuan, so he must have visited Chengdu. Well I saw some Chilie's pictures in Chinese websites and was not impressed. Oh well, I don't know! lol I was not really impressed when I first came to the U.S. and the car drove by the city with so many idle people sitting in front for rundown houses. I guess you can always find shabby places in any country.
