The prayer halls in mosques are typically carpeted areas as our congregational prayers include physical actions such as bowing on the ground and kneeling.

Because of this shoes are not worn in the prayer area. Anyone entering the area to pray is expected to perform ablution known as wudu, which includes a step to wash your feet.

Many people will wear thier socks after performing ablution, but it is good manners to only wear socks that are clean and don't smell.
