Super Bowl a magnet for under-age sex trade

.ATLANTA (Reuters) – Pimps will traffic thousands of under-age prostitutes to Texas for Sunday's Super Bowl, hoping to do business with men arriving for the big game with money to burn, child rights advocates said.

As the country's largest sporting event, the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers will make the Dallas-Fort Worth area a magnet for business of all kinds.

That includes the multimillion dollar, under-age sex industry, said activists and law enforcement officials working to combat what they say is an annual spike in trafficking of under-age girls ahead of the Super Bowl.

"The Super Bowl is one of the biggest human trafficking events in the United States," Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott told a trafficking prevention meeting in January.

Girls who enter the grim trade face a life of harsh treatment and danger, according to a Dallas police report in 2010. Few who emerge are willing to speak about it. Tina Frundt, 36, is an exception.

Now married and living in Washington D.C., Frundt was lured into sex work at 14 after she fell for a 24-year-old who invited her to leave home in 1989 and join his "family" in Cleveland, Ohio.

That family consisted of the man and three girls living in a motel. When Frundt declined on the first night to have sex with her boyfriend's friends they raped her.

"I was angry with myself for not listening to him, so the next night when he sent me out on the street and told me ... (to earn $500) I listened," she said in a telephone interview.

Frundt paced the streets for hours and finally got into a client's car.

When she came home in the morning with just $50, her pimp beat her in front of the other girls to teach them all a lesson and sent her back onto the street the next night with the warning not to return until she had reached the quota.

The scenario was repeated night after night as Frundt's pimp moved his stable across the Midwest. Any sign of rebellion led to further beatings. Escape seemed out of the question.

"I was a teen-ager in a strange town with no money and no place to go," she said. She finally escaped by getting arrested.

ENSNARED

Up to 300,000 girls between 11 and 17 are lured into the U.S. sex industry annually, according to a 2007 report sponsored by the Department of Justice and written by the nonprofit group Shared Hope International.

Some 90 percent of runaways and children whose parents force them to leave home fall into the trade and are often beaten, drugged, raped or imprisoned to force compliance, said a section of the report which referred to Atlanta.

Pimps tattoo girls with "$" signs or the word "Daddy" and take them to unfamiliar cities where they are more vulnerable.

Typically, pimps recruit unwitting girls at shopping centers, mall events and on the Internet. Once ensnared, shame, fear and psychological manipulation by pimps make it hard to break free.

Clients, often called "Johns," hook up with girls via the Internet, through hotels, massage parlors, strip clubs and escort services, the report said.

"At previous Super Bowls, pimps hired cab drivers to turn their vehicles into mobile brothels," said Deena Graves, executive director of child advocacy group Traffick911.

Up to 10,000 adult and under-age girls have come to previous Super Bowls, said Jerry Strickland, communications director in the Texas attorney general's office, who acknowledged that precise figures are hard to gauge.

"The statistics are a moving target. They (under age sex workers) can't be counted in turnstiles like ticket holders," he said in an interview.

RESCUE

Law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups rescued around 50 girls during the previous two Super Bowls, said Graves. Six were registered on the Center for Missing and Exploited Children website. One had been trafficked from Hawaii.

"Even one rescue is considered a success," said Frundt who now advocates for exploited girls and has founded a girls' treatment center and a safe house for girls in Washington D.C.

To fight the trade, authorities, child welfare advocates and the airline industry are collaborating.

Representatives from American Airlines, Delta, United, Quantas and American Eagle are holding a training session to help them spot signs of trafficking. Nancy Rivard, president of Airline Ambassadors International, will also work with another 100 flight crews to distribute materials on flights.

Some 67,000 people signed a petition on Change.org Petitions – Online Petitions for Social Change opposing sex trafficking as part of a campaign by Traffick911 called "I'm Not Buying It!" that is supported by 60 nonprofits and faith-based groups.

That campaign has also attracted heavy hitters like Dallas Cowboy Jay Ratliff, a three-time Pro Bowler, who made a public service announcement entitled "Real men don't buy children. They don't buy sex."

Ratliff, who himself has two daughters, is recruiting other National Football League players for the campaign.

"You hear of sex trafficking overseas," he wrote in an email from Hawaii where he is playing in the Pro Bowl. "But you never imagine it is happening in the United States."

How is it American morals if it is Illegal in the U.S. ? Should we pin terrorism as part of Pakistani Morals because it runs rampant in the country ?

Lets not use this as something to jab the U.S. with but to raise awareness on the issue.

.
I fail to understand the rationale behind your original title (I have changed it).

If illegal underage trafficking in the US is a reflection on US morals, then what does the fact that in Pakistan a bill to establish a 'minimum age for marriage' was dropped because it 'might conflict with the culture in rural areas' say about Pakistani morals?

.
When there is demand there is supply..10,000 girls are traficked for the super bowl alone..i dont see that many underage marriages happening in Pakistan..even these so called under age marriage are not so politically incorrect that girls being straight out trafficked. Pedophilia is running rampant in USA..

Great! And I live one mile from the Cowboys Stadium. The railroad tracks run right behind our neighborhood.

I just found out Warren Buffet (3rd richest man in the world) is going to park his private train there, complete with a steam engine ( No emissions ticket for him I bet).

No wonder Burlington Northern was cleaning up their mess by the tracks ( he owns the company), and even sent the street sweepers around our streets. It is supposed to be blocked off for general traffic. We'll see!!

We can criticize the US when Pakistan can at least pass a law against underage sex and marriage.

Of course the Mullah's will go nuts if you try to do that, claiming (incorrectly) that it is Sunnah.

What's this then?

In Pakistan, a Sex Industry Has Begun to Boom

SEX IN DEPTH
In Pakistan, a dark trade comes to light
By William Sparrow
BANGKOK – Prostitution in the Islamic nation of Pakistan, once relegated to dark alleys and small red-light districts, is now seeping into many neighborhoods of country’s urban centers. Reports indicate that since the period of civilian rule ended in 1977, times have changed and now the sex industry is bustling.
Early military governments and religious groups sought to reform areas like the famous “Taxali Gate” district of Lahore by displacing prostitutes and their families in an effort to “reinvent” the neighborhood.

While displacing the prostitutes might have temporarily made the once small red-light district a better neighborhood for a time, it did little to stop the now dispersed prostitutes from plying their trade. Reforming a neighborhood, instead of offering education and alternative opportunities, appears to be at the core of early failures to curb the nascent sex industry. This mistake would become a prophetic error as now the tendrils of the sex trade have become omnipresent in cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore, not to mention towns, villages and rural outposts.

An aid worker for an Islamabad-based non-governmental organization (NGO) recently related a story: quickly after his arrival in the capital, he realized the house next to his own was a Chinese brothel. The Chinese ability to “franchise” the commercial sex industry by providing down-trodden Chinese women throughout Asia, North America and Europe would be admirable in a business sense if it were not for the atrocities – human trafficking, sexual slavery and exploitation – which cloud its practice.

Chinese bordellos, often operating as “massage parlors” or beauty salons, are across Pakistan, even spread even to war-torn and restive locations such as the Afghan capital Kabul. Chinese in the sex industry have developed a cunning ability to recognize areas where the demand for sex far outstrips the supply.

The NGO worker said that after months of living adjacent to the brothel things were shaken up – literally. One evening a drunk Pakistani drove his car into the brothel. Later the driver told authorities the ramming was a protest by a devout Muslim against the debauchery of the house and its inhabitants. The NGO worker, however, had seen the same car parked peacefully outside the house the night before.

The local sex industry comprised of Pakistani prostitutes has also grown in recent years. One can easily find videos on YouTube that show unabashed red-light areas of Lahore. The videos display house after house with colorfully lit entranceways always with a mamasan and at least one Pakistani woman in traditional dress. The women are available for in-house services for as little as 400 rupees (US$6) to take-away prices ranging 1,000 to 2,000 rupees. These districts are mostly for locals, but foreigners can indulge at higher prices.

Foreigners in Pakistan have no trouble finding companionship and may receive rates similar to locals in downtrodden districts. More upscale areas like Lahore’s Heera Mundi or “Diamond Market”, cater to well-heeled locals and foreigners. At these places prettier, younger girls push their services for 5,000 to 10,000 rupees for an all-night visit, and the most exceptional can command 20,000 to 40,000 rupees for just short time.

Rumors abound online that female TV stars and actresses can be hired for sex. “You can get film stars for 50,000 to 100,000 rupees but you need good contacts for that,” one blogger wrote after a trip to Lahore.

“The Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi sex scenes are totally changing and it’s easier and easier to get a girl for [sex],” another blogger wrote. “Most of the hotels provide you the girls upon request.” Bloggers also reported that it is easy to find girls prowling the streets after 6 pm, and foreigners can find young women hanging out near Western franchises like McDonald’s and KFC. Such women, the bloggers claim, can lead the customer to a nearby short-time accommodation.

Short-time hotels offering hourly rates can be found all over major cities, underscoring the profits being reaped by the sex industry.

Pakistan can also accommodate the gay community with prostitution. Unfortunately, this has also given rise to child prostitution.

A Pakistani blogger wrote, “We [ethnic] Pathans are very fond of boys. [In Pakistan] the wives are only [had sex with] once or twice a year. There are lot of gay brothels in Peshawar – the famous among them is at Ramdas Bazaar. [One can] go to any Afghan restaurant and find young waiters selling sex.”

As in many societies, access to technology, the Internet and mobile phones has only facilitated the sex trade in Pakistan. “Matchmaking” websites serve the male clientele, while providing marketing for prostitutes.

The root causes of prostitution in Pakistan are poverty and a dearth of opportunities. Widows find themselves on the streets with mouths to feed, and for many prostitution offers a quick fix. A local Pakistani prostitute can earn 2,000 to 3,000 rupees per day compared to the average monthly income of 2,500 rupees.

Forced prostitution is not rare. Women in hard times are often exploited and pushed into prostitution. Sandra (not her real name), said that after the death of her father she was left alone; friends and relatives deserted her after the grieving period. As a middle-class, educated woman she was surprised to find herself forced into prostitution from her office job.

“My boss initially spoiled me at first,” she told Khaleej Times. “[But] now I am in [the sex industry].” Sandra first thought her boss was being gracious, but quickly learned he was grooming her for sex for his own pleasure, and then acting as her pimp.

Many of Pakistan’s contemporary sexual mores may have evolved from traditional practices. For example, the polygamy permitted in Muslim society stemmed from the need for larger family units, the better to support familial ties and tend for widows. Until such ancient customs are updated, women such as Sandra will continue to be bought and sold.

It’s time for Pakistan to admit that prostitution is doing a roaring trade within its borders, and will continue to prosper until it is addressed in a modern manner. Let us hope that the people and government of this proud Muslim country will stop pretending the problem simply isn’t there.

it is "unlawful" to do that (underage sex) in the USA. Everyone involved in doing that are doing it unlawfully and if found, will be dealt with severly!

Please tell me, is it unlawful in your place for such an act? how many people have been convicted on child sex?

There are a BILLION things that America does that people ALL OVER THE WORLD can emulate - education, research, rights to civilians, safety to citizens, a free media (not fox news - other media - the one that actually gave you farenheit 911!). and you go and find stuff that is done by criminals, pin it to ALL AMERICANS - and when we find so many pakistanis are found behind terror attacks , the normal public start to equate you guys to terrorists, you guys cry foul!!

I wish more Pakistani s were like Agnostic!

Even in saudi we have the so called redlight districts..prostitution exists everywhere for the less fortunate!

I agree that Pakistan isn't much a position to criticize the US, but isn't the legal marriage age in Pakistan 16?

Btw... does anyone know why they outlawed Prostitution in Rhode Island? It used to be the only state where prostitution was legal statewide.

Unhappy arranged marriages are leading some Pakistani men to prey on white girls for sex, a Muslim politician has warned.

Lord Ahmed said Asian men who are forced into loveless marriages – often with cousins from overseas – may seek out white girls for ‘fun’.

But last night, the senior Labour peer was accused of encouraging the stereotyping of Pakistani communities with his comments.

The senior Labour peer is the first politician to make a direct link between first-cousin marriages and sex crimes by Pakistani men.

He said it was time for the Muslim community to ‘wake up’ to the issue, and do more to promote UK-based marriages.

Earlier this month, former home secretary Jack Straw caused a furore when he said white girls were seen as ‘easy meat’ by some Pakistani men.

He spoke out after Mohammed Liaquat, 28, and Abid Saddique, 27, were jailed for a minimum of 11 and eight years respectively for grooming and abusing 26 girls in Derby, 22 of whom were white. The seven other members of the sex gang had already been jailed at a previous trial.

Last November, five Asian men were jailed for grooming white girls as young as 12 in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Lord Ahmed, who grew up in Rotherham, said many young Asian men suffer from loveless cousin marriages and called for an end to the practice. He said: ‘They are forced into marriages and they are not happy.

‘They are married to girls from overseas who they don’t have anything in common with, and they have children and a family.

‘But they are looking for fun in their sexual activities and seek out vulnerable girls.’

He said they resort to abusing girls because they do not want meaningful relationships with women. ‘An adult woman – if you are having an affair – would want your time, money and for you to break up your marriage,’ he said.

‘I get a lot of criticism from Asian people who ask: “How can you say this about Asian men?” But they must wake up and realise there is a problem.

Asian men are targeting white girls for 'fun' because of unhappy arranged marriages, says Muslim peer | Mail Online

having worked with people battling on the front lines of the child sex trade. I can tell you it is a world wide problem. In the U.S. authorities agressivly target anyone suspected of engaging in it. Unlike some countries where the police activly protect the sex slave rings. I know directly of at least one instance in a unnamed country. The people I was working with had a house under survellience. The idea being to find out how many kids are involved, how many bad guys there are. And the best strategy to rescue the kids without casualties.

This time the team was short handed so it was decided to enlist the help of contacts in the U.S. embassy. Who in turn would get the help of trusted authorities. This turned out to be a mistake. Not long after the embassy made some calls. A police truck pulled up in front of the house and loaded the kids up and took them to another house.
