Chinese swimming ace Sun Yang won his third straight title in men's 400m freestyle, while Sarah Sjostrom surprisingly broke women's 100m freestyle world record in the team relay event at the 17th FINA World Championships on Sunday.

On swimming's opening day in the Hungarian capital, Sun, ranked second in the heat, set himself on the leading position after 150 meters en route to his third straight champion after 2013 and 2015. It was also the first swimming gold medal at the tournament this year.

Sun clocked 3 minutes 41.38 seconds, the fastest time of the year. Australia's Mack Horton, Rio Olympics gold medalist, finished runner-up at 3:43.85. Gabriele Detti of Italy was placed third with 0.08 second behind.

Sun let off all his pressure by roaring and punching water when he saw the results. Forefinger in the air means that he is still the best swimmer around the world in the event.

"It was not about my opponent's lackluster performance. Maybe I just did better today, and training on some details recently has paid off," Sun talked about his morale-boosting victory.

Sun will also compete in 200m, 800m and 1500m frees at worlds, and he needs to adjust himself quickly before appearing in the 200m heat on Monday morning.

Swimming powerhouse United States kicked off a winning start as they bagged the remaining three golds on Sunday.

In women's 400m freestyle, Katie Ledecky (Center, photo) broke the championships record for the second time in a single day, as her time of 3 minutes 58.34 seconds has bettered that of 3:59.06 in the heat.

Her teammate Leah Smith (Left of photo) ranked second at 4:01.54.

China's Li Bingjie (right), 15, tasted the bronze at 4:03.25 in her maiden World Championships appearance
.

Li, regarding Ledecky as her idol, said that she felt both excited and nervous in the water.

"I felt excited because I have got a chance of competing with my idol. However, it was just my first World Championships, unavoidably, I felt a bit nervous," she said, adding that she was not totally satisfied with the result.

Team USA also snatched two golds in men's and women's 4x100m freestyle relay, but Sjostrom grabbed more spotlight even though the Swedish team only finished fifth in the women's event.

Sjostrom, on the first baton, took on 51.71 seconds to break Australian Cate Campbell's previous world record of 52.06 seconds set last July.

The Chinese team, made up of Zhu Menghui, Zhang Yufei, Wu Yue and Ai Yanhan, followed Sweden to finish sixth.

Britain's Adam Peaty, first in men's 100m breaststroke semifinals, was the other athlete that set a new championships record at 57.75 seconds on Sunday. Chinese swimmer Yan Zibei also made into the final.

Sun Yang cruised to win his third straight 400m freestyle world title in Budapest, clocking 3:41.38, pumping his fist and splashing water in his typical fashion.

The Chinese Sun, 25, beat Rio gold medalist Mack Horton by a whopping 2.47 seconds with the fastest time in the world since 2012.

Horton, who edged Sun by .13 at the Olympics, had choice words for Sun both last year and last week, having called the Chinese superstar a “drug cheat” for serving a three-month doping ban in 2014.

“I’m just going to focus on what’s happening this week and do my best,” Sun said through an interpreter, according to The Associated Press. “I have no exact target for the week. I’m in a lot of pain. I’ve been training a lot for the last year. I’m also getting old, so there are a couple of injuries here and there. I’m always wrapped up in tape after every competition.”

Horton swam 2.3 seconds slower than in Rio.

“The most disappointing thing for me was the time,” Horton said, according to the AP. “Placings didn’t really matter this year.”

Italian Gabriele Detti took bronze, just as he did in Rio. The top American was Zane Grothe in seventh, the lowest result by the top American in this event since 1998.

Sun earned his eighth overall individual world title, moving ahead of Grant Hackett and Aaron Peirsol as solo third all time among men behind Michael Phelps (15) and Ryan Lochte (10).

Sun can build on that total in the 200m, 800m and 1500m frees later in the meet. He has won all of those events at past Olympics or worlds.

Men’s 400m Freestyle Results
Gold: Sun Yang (CHN) — 3:41.38
Silver: Mack Horton (AUS) — 3:43.85
Bronze: Gabriele Detti (ITA) — 3:43.93

4. Park Tae-Hwan (KOR) — 3:44.38
5. Felix Auboeck (AUT) — 3:45.21
6. James Guy (GBR) — 3:45.58
7. Zane Grothe (USA) — 3:45.86
8. David McKeon (AUS) — 3:46.27

Sun clocked three minutes and 41.38 seconds, finishing 2.47 seconds ahead of second-placed Horton, who had previously dubbed his rival a dope cheat prior to beating the Chinese superstar at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Italy’s Gabriele Detti took bronze as Sun dominated the Budapest final, building on his commanding lead at the halfway point.

Horton had taunted Sun again before the Budapest race, saying it was “a rivalry between clean athletes and those who tested positive”.

The Australian was referring to Sun’s three-month ban in 2014 for taking a stimulant. However, Sun enjoyed sweet revenge at the Duna Arena, giving a triumphant roar when he touched the wall first.

But despite taking revenge after his long-standing war of words with Horton, Sun was gracious towards his rival.

“A long time has passed since Rio, we both got stressed, we both calmed down,” said Sun.

“I made a renewed effort in my training, especially in the last half year. I believe in this event, I will keep doing better and better and so will he.”

Sun’s victory in Budapest means he now has eight world gold medals spanning four championships dating back to Shanghai in 2011.

He has now won the 400m world title at each of the last three championships after his Barcelona 2013 and Kazan 2015 triumphs.

Having had to eat humble pie, Horton said his 400m time in the final was more painful than the actual defeat.

“I thought I would have been faster, the time stings more than losing,” said the 21-year-old. “I thought I was capable of more tonight, I tried to be stronger in the front part of the race.”

China’s Sun Yang looks to fry Australian Mack Horton in grudge return
Sun could finish with four world golds in Budapest with the 200m, 800m and 1500m freestyle races still to come.

“It’s too early to say,” said Sun, 25, when asked if he was targeting four golds, but said he fears none of his rivals.

“There’s not much about my competitors that I am afraid of – it doesn’t make much sense to be afraid.

“Comps are still comps and we can always meet again next time. I am not afraid of losing, if you do, that’s just something you have to deal with.

“I don’t get anxious anymore about the competition, it’s not something you have to take to heart.”

Sun’s winning time was 1.31 seconds behind Paul Biedermann’s world record – set at the 2009 worlds during the era when the now-banned neoprene suits were used.

The Chinese star said he is working towards lowering the eight-year-old record – one of the few which still stands from that era.

Sun shower: tearful Sun Yang accuses conqueror Mack Horton of dirty tricks after Rio loss
“It is a really long process,” he said. “It’s all about training step by step and keep pursuing myself to get better in the 400m freestyle.

“I keep looking out for new ways to enhance my performance, I am satisfied with my progress. I’ll keep doing more training, I think this is the way to break a world record.”

BUDAPEST, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese swimmer Sun Yang made a strong comeback to finish third in men's 200m freestyle semifinals and secured a final spot at the 17th FINA World Championships here on Monday.

Two championships records were shattered, by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom in women's 100m butterfly and Britain's Adam Peaty in men's 100m breaststroke, respectively.

Sun, who won three 400m freestyle title in a row on Sunday, was restrained to the final position after first two laps, before he came back to finish second in his group and third overall with 1 minute and 45.24 seconds.

"I didn't expect that my opponents swam so fast, and they built a one-second lead after 100 meters," commented Sun.

Sun is expected to face physical challenge on Tuesday as he will compete in 800m free heat in the morning, then the 200m free final in the evening.

Xu Jiayu, who finished just one hundredth second shy of the world record at the National Championships this April, continued his in-form performance in men's 100m backstroke semifinals to sit atop with 52.44 seconds.

"I didn't want to give myself too much pressure before the contest, and just aimed at a better personal record," Xu pointed out.

She only ranked 13th among 16 semi-finalists with one minute and 0.39 second. Her teammate Chen Jie also crashed out from the semifinals with a deficit of 0.03 second at ninth.

"My training was quite systematic and went well before I came here. I didn't expect to finish the 100m backstroke in such a poor manner," Fu said, also expressing her expectation towards the 50m backstroke competition.

Peaty, Olympic gold medalist in Rio, clocked 57.47 seconds to defend his world title in men's 100m breaststroke, also bettering previous championships record of 57.75 seconds, set by himself in Sunday's semifinals. China's Yan Zibei ranked seventh at 59.42.

One day after breaking the women's 100m freestyle world record in the team relay event, Sjostrom went on to beat the championships record of 100m butterfly with 55.53 seconds. The previous record was 55.64 seconds, she set two years ago in Kazan. It was also her fourth gold medal in the event at worlds. The Chinese swimmer Zhang Yufei was placed eighth.

"I'm surprised by this result, also happy about it. It's my fourth gold in 100m butterfly, and I just feel proud," said the Swedish.

Shi Jinglin made into the women's 100m breaststroke final with her fifth ranking.

The Hungarian crowds enjoyed a wonderful night as local favorite Katinka Hosszu won the women's 200m individual medley champion with two minutes and seven seconds.

"It means a lot to me, and it's incredible to experience with the crowds. It definitely gives you extra energy and motivation. It's just crazy," said Hosszu.

Britain won two gold medals on Monday with Benjamin Proud's triumph in men's 50m butterfly gold with 22.75 seconds.

BUDAPEST, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Olympic champion Sun Yang of China won his first title in men's 200m freestyle at the 17th FINA World Championships here on Tuesday.

Placed sixth after the first 100 meters, Sun made a stong comeback to clock 1 minute and 44.39 seconds to record his groundbreaking victory, beating the Asian record of 1:44.47 he set in 2013. It was also his second title in the Hungarian capital after the 400m free.

"I feel happy about the gold medal. Actually I didn't expect such a result, and just wanted to work on every detail," said Sun after his victory.

Sun claimed the golds in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle before his 200m triumph at worlds. He is also the Olympic champion in 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle.

"I lost the race with a bit pity at World Championships in Kazan two years ago. Today my dream has come true," Sun pointed out.

Townley Haas of the United States and Aleksandr Krasnykh of Russia finished second and third respectively.

QINGDAO, China, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Backstroke specialist Xu Jiayu broke the Asian record of the men's 100m backstroke at the Chinese Swimming Championships here on Wednesday.

Xu, 21, took the gold of the event in 51.86 seconds, and sliced a big margin from the previous Asian record of 52.24 seconds.

"I thought I might break the national record tonight, but I never thought I could swim into 52 seconds," said Xu who took the silver medal of the event at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in a national record breaking pace of 52.31 seconds.

Xu trailed behind Ryan Murphy in Rio and his new Asian record is only 0.01 shy of the world record, set up by the American in the medley relay at the 2016 Olympic Games.

"Maybe I could break the world record if I improve a tiny detail. It's unpredictable," said Xu, who attributed his record performance to his confidence. "But I won't think about breaking the record, neither the World Championships nor the National Games. I don't want to put too much pressure upon myself."

Fu Yuanhui, Xu's teammate in both the national and provincial squads, also improved her personal best in the women's 100m backstroke as she set a national record of 58.72 seconds, 0.04 seconds faster than her Olympic bronze medal winning time in Rio last year.

Fu, 21, went all out in the final and got cramp after leaving the pool. "I was surprised by the result. I didn't perform well in the last two days. Then I realized that I should be more anxious for the race," said Fu.

"If I'm not nervous, I could not swim fast," said Fu. "I could hardly sleep while I was trying to adjust my state. And this morning, I felt I was nervous and I even wanted to vomit after having breakfast."

The two records stole the spotlight of Sun Yang partly although the Olympic champion dominated the 200m freestyle in one minute and 44.91 seconds.

Sun's result was 0.26 seconds slower than his winning mark at the Rio Games but was still faster enough for him to clinch the Olympic title as the second-placed Chad Le Clos from South Africa finished the race in one minute and 45.20 seconds.

In the morning session, Sun took the top place of the 800m freestyle heats in eight minutes and 0.66 seconds.

Yan Zibei led the men's 50m breaststroke heats in 27.36 seconds, slicing the previous national record by 0.02 seconds.

The 21-year-old Yan broke the national record of the 100m breaststroke on Monday.

In the other two finals on Wednesday, Hou Yajie claimed the gold of the women's 1,500m freestyle in 16 minutes and 13.37 seconds. Shi Linjing finished first in the women's 100m breaststroke in one minute and 6.94 seconds.

BUDAPEST, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Xu Jiayu claimed the champion of the men's 100m backstroke at the 17th FINA World Championships here on Tuesday, the first ever victory for Chinese male swimmers in the event at worlds.

Xu, who ranked first in Monday's heats and semifinals, built his leading position from the start and finished atop the podium with 52.44 seconds, beating his American opponent Matt Grevers, the London Olympic champion, by four hundredths second.

"I didn't expect to win by such a small margin. The result was not quite up to my expectation, but in the end I won the title," said Xu.

"I felt a little tired in the final part of the race, and did not feel as smooth as in the semifinals, because it had much impact on the podium position," he added.

Xu finished 51.86 seconds in National Championships in April, just one hundredth second shy of the world record set by Ryan Murphy of the United States last year in Rio. Olympic champion Murphy got the bronze medal at 52.59 seconds.

"I performed quite well in the semifinals, so it was normal for me to have some ideas in my mind. Actually I aimed at rewriting the world record before the matchup.

"This time it could be seen as a surprise, and I lived up to my expectation, while failing to give myself some surprises," Xu pointed out.

Before Xu's triumph, Chinese swimming star Sun Yang clinched his first gold medal in men's 200m freestyle at the World Championships.

"I could also stand at the stage center now, just like he did," Xu said confidently.
