Today I learned about the Sumela Monastery, which is an amazing monastery in the former Byzantine Empire, now deep in Eastern Turkey, which was built in the 4th century. It is an amazing architectural marvel, built alongside a cliff.

Think about it, if you were a Greek Orthodox monk living here, in a monastery that was standing for a 1000 years, and suddenly one day the Ottomans conquers your territory and you are now in an alien empire. Over the centuries, you tentatively survive in this new reality, then one day, all Greeks are forced to evacuate the region and abandon this 1500 year old monastery.

Shows you that nothing is permanent in life. Nothing is guaranteed tomorrow. All empires collapse one day.

It's an important part of our heritage. Lots of Pontian Greeks visit it every year.

Although...there was an incident were some Turkish DJ had a party there and there was an outrage about it. Probably the Ministry of Culture or the municipality gave him permission and he had a party in the monastery...I think it was 2-3 years ago?

.
How did Erdoğan get away with it and not do this too... Mosque, like other Greek-Orthodox churches, leave me amazed.

.
Turks are great nation

on the other hand Greeks destroyed Ottoman Mosques in Greece
and Athens was only city in Europe without a Mosque

You conquered our lands, turned our churches into mosques, warehouses, stables and you have the audacity to blame us? You? The conquerors? The invaders?

They should have all been turned into Mosques in retaliation for what you did to the Mosques in your country.
It says a-lot about the Turk that they have not done this, they would every justification to do so.

Since you talked about retaliation, who first made churches in mosques or stables..... The Turk in the 15th century or the Greek in the... 20th century?

If you knew history, you'd know that they came to our lands,to our parts and converted our churches into mosques or warehouses or closed them. And they built some mosques of their own. Our churches were there way before they came from the depths of Asia.

But since we're at it...
