becoming a country needs recognition from many countries, it would be better for Sulu to seek supports from abroad before bringing UN. For now, Malaysia will win easily as no one yet (except Philippines) recognize Sulu as a state, separated from either Malaysia or Philippines.

We dont recognized them as separate country sir sulu is a province under the ARMM (autonomous region for Muslim Mindanao) the only reason the sultan is part is the culture of the area the claim was already given to the Philippine government to pursue it in the Internationally but you know the Tausugs are known for their courage not brains (they started the Muslim insurgency in Mindanao) and being excellent seafarers! One i support the claims but only in the context of International law and peaceful means not by force what they did was wrong using arms like if they were attacking a Philippine Army outpost is not it will not work against a sovereign state beside attacking an outpost it still will not work anyway again all courage no brains.

The point is, Philippines had been recognizing Sulu through Mr. Ferdinand Marcos acknowledgement of Sultan Mahakuttah Kiram. Bringing an acknowledgement for the Sultan is indirectly recognizing his reign over certain part. The fact that Philippine government put Sulu under ARMM is another story.

Please fine-tune your brain. The Sultanate already ceded their territories to the Philippines a long time ago. Hence, if ever Sabah is returned, it will be returned as part of the territory of the Philippines and not as a Sultanate territory. However, the Sultanate has a historic right to Sabah and therefore some sort of royalty payments must be given to the Sultanate.

I'm sure every Filipino remembers the now infamous catchphrase of Pnoy (Aquino) that all Filipinos are his bosses. Did he forget that already? Does he not consider these sultanates as Filipinos? Everyone gave Pnoy that trust in 2010 that he will treat Filipinos as his bosses, but that does not seem to be the case in this Sabah situation. By way of reprimanding the Sultanate of Sulu, is like scolding him like a sixth grader and ‘till him to surrender is unacceptable, because by saying so, he is "aiding" the enemy which is Malaysia, and as such it is tantamount to TREASON. Why not sit down with the Sultan and ask him what is the real REAL purpose as to why the Sultan wants the ancestral back?then promise him that (as President ) being the elected leader of the land will elevate this case to the United Nations once and for all. It will become another problem for Australia and Indonesia. Indonesia never liked Australia to be right in front of its door, this could lead to another war between Indonesia and Australia like in 1960's, and Indonesia itself will likely do nothing to stop these rebels, after all these rebels were created by Malaysian government, Indonesia will only keep its borders safe.

This is Malaysia's own problem, she created it and let her be done with what she created. Inviting another army will escalate the conflict.

True. Pres. Aquino has a big part in the escalation of the fighting in Sabah because of his unwise statements which add fuel to the fire.The second to be blamed is the Malaysian government in underestimating the bravery and determination of the Tausugs.

As shooting escalates and more casualties, many more Tausugs will join the fighting and Malaysia will surely be in trouble. Civil war is in the offing if Malaysia will continue to make the wrong move.
I just hope they will swallow their pride and negotiate with the Sultanate of Sulu before it’s too late.

Palace Mulls Sabah Claim Revival

The Philippine government may soon find itself dusting off old historical and legal records related to the Sabah territory as Justice Secretary Leila de Lima Monday hinted that the Aquino administration might revive its dormant claim on the northeastern portion of Borneo island.

In an ambush interview at the sidelines of the 11th Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Experts Group on Competition, Sec. de Lima confirmed that the DOJ has already submitted to President Aquino its legal opinion on the Philippines' dormant claim on Sabah but she declined to divulge the content of the document.

She, however, tipped off that the Philippines might bring the issue to an “appropriate tribunal.”

“Wala pang definitive decision ang Presidente kung ire-refer niya ba yan to a group of independent experts because these are complex matters. I tried to come up with a comprehensive study considering the historical perspective and then the legal aspect,” according to Sec. de Lima.

“The main question in our minds now is: do we have strong and valid ground if we bring it now to an appropriate tribunal?” she asked.

Justice Secretary was quick to clarify that the Department of Justice's (DOJ) legal study on the Sabah claim and its recommendation was still subject for President Aquino's approval.

“It remains the prerogative of the President whether to consider or not such study or to adopt the same, if at all,” she explained.

The DOJ and DFA were earlier tasked by President Aquino to conduct a study on the validity of the Kirams’ claim to Sabah. The President said that the issue of the ownership of Sabah was somewhat a continuation of the incident of the Jabidah.

The Jabidah Massacre refers to the massacre of a number of young Moros recruited by the military from Sulu and Tawi-Tawi during the Marcos governance. These young Moros were shipped to Corregidor to train as a commando force. From there, they were sent to Sabah to create chaos and destabilization.

When the young Moros knew the real intent of their mission dubbed “Operation Merdeka,” they demanded to be returned home but instead their military handlers prevented them and killed them instead. A lone survivor identified as Jibin Arula recounted the events about the massacre and the rest is history.

President Aquino stated that to resolve the issue, it should start not on speculation, opinion or assumption but in identifying the truth including a thorough examination of the written records on the Sabah issue; one direction the President assured is not the use force or violence.

The Justice department, specifically, was ordered to determine whether Kiram, his brother, Sulu Sultan Jamalul KIram III, their cohorts and collaborators may be charged for supposedly inciting a war with Malaysia, as well as a slew of other criminal cases.

Meanwhile, a Tawi-Tawi court judge has granted the request of the 38 suspected members of Royal Sultanate Forces (RSF), who are allegedly involved in the Sabah expedition, for their case to be reinvestigated.

In a text message, Public Attorneys Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta said Tawi-Tawi Regional Trial Court Branch 5 Judge Peter Eisma has ordered in an open court on Monday for the cases of the 38 alleged RSF members, who are all facing charges of violation of Article 118 of the Revised Penal Code (inciting to war) and violations of the election gun ban, be reinvestigated.

All the accused are currently detained at the naval facility in Panglima Sugala in Tawi-Tawi.

“Na-grant na ng judge yung finile nila na motion for reinvestigation. Bahala na si Ma'am [Sec. Leila de Lima] to decide if the reinvestigation will be handled by the Department of Justice or National Prosecution Service [NPS],” she said.

She also said that they also moved that the bail of 38 RSF members be reduced from P164,000 for each of the respondents to P 9,000.

“For the three charges na sinampa for the 38 accused it was earlier computed na ang total bail for all of them is P6.2 million. Since they are indigent, we are asking the judge to reduce the bail to a total P342,000,” she said.

“The relatives contributed to be able to produce bail but they cannot afford the recommended bail,” Acosta said.

Besides, Acosta pointed that under the Rules of Criminal Procedure, the amount of bail to be fixed by the court should be reasonable. It should also consider, among others, the financial ability of the accused to give bail.

As a form of "sympathy," the Sulu sultanate promised legal assistance to eight persons detained by Malaysia in Sabah even though it has refused to recognize them as Filipinos.

Those arrested and charged are not Filipinos but Malaysians, Abraham Idjirani, sultanate spokesman and secretary general, said. Nevertheless, the sultanate was willing to help them out, he added.

"Even if they are Malaysians, the sultanate of Sulu will willingly help them and provide assistance in whatever capacity the sultanate can do," Idjirani told reporters.

The sultanate can assist in filing a complaint against Malaysia before the International Court of Justice or before any sovereign state willing to intervene in the matter, Idjirani said.

"Sapagkat ang sultanate of Sulu lalo na ang sultan of Sulu possess a sympathetic heart," Idjirani said.

(The gesture was made because the sultanate of Sulu, most especially the Sultan, possess a sympathetic heart.)

Malaysian media earlier reported that one of the eight arrested claimed he was given money to join the Royal Security Force in Sabah. If found guilty, the eight arrested could face the death penalty.
