Brunei has banned public celebrations of Christmas, warning that putting up festive decorations or singing carols could threaten the country's Muslim faith.

The conservative Islamic country on the island of Borneo allows non-Muslims to celebrate Christmas, but only within their communities, and they must first alert the authorities.

At least 65 per cent of the 420,000-strong population of the oil-rich state are Muslims.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs said in a statement: "These enforcement measures are ... intended to control the act of celebrating Christmas excessively and openly, which could damage the aqidah (beliefs) of the Muslim community."

In a warning to Muslims earlier this month, a group of Imams warned that any celebration "not in any way related to Islam” could lead to "‘tasyabbuh’ (imitation) and unknowingly damage the ‘aqidah’ (faith) of Muslims".

“During Christmas celebrations, Muslims following that religion’s acts – such as using their religious symbols like cross, lighting candles, making Christmas trees and singing religious songs, sending Christmas greetings, using signs praising the religion, putting up decorations or creating sounds and doing anything that amounts to respecting their religion – are against Islamic faith,” the Imams said, according to the Borneo Bulletin.

“Some may think that it is a frivolous matter and should not be brought up as an issue. But as Muslims and as a Zikir Nation, we must keep it (following other religions’ celebrations) away as it could affect our Islamic faith.”

Some Brunei residents rejected the ban, by posting Christmas pictures on social media using the #MyTreedom hashtag.

Brunei, a former British protectorate, is run as an absolutist Muslim monarchy by the Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, 67.

Political discontent is limited thanks to a high standard of living and free education and health care, although members of the royal family have been criticised for their extravagant lifestyles.

Michael Jackson, the late pop singer, was reportedly paid more than £10 million to give a concert in Brunei in 1996 to mark the sultan’s 50th birthday.

Last year, the sultan caused controversy by introducing Sharia criminal law, which allows for punishments including stoning, whipping and amputation.

This policy triggered a boycott of the hotel chain owned by the Sultan of Brunei’s sovereign wealth investment agency by a group of celebrities, fashion designers and other famous names.

Backed by the likes of Stephen Fry, Stella McCartney and Sir Richard Branson, the rich, famous and chic were urged not to book into any of the Dorchester Collection venues, including the Dorchester in London, Le Meurice in Paris, the Beverly Hills Hotel in LA and Il Principe in Milan.

This Scum of Brunei is increasingly becoming a fan of religion to cover his own corruption...

But who would be celebrating Xmas in Brunei since it is 100% Muslim country. So practically it does not make much difference...so chillax

A little correction, my friend. There is a Christian minority in Brunei; about 10% of the population is Christians.

Christianity in Brunei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
But if you read, basically they allow but he just banned the public festivity...though in my personal opinion it was needless but still it should not blown out of proportions. Even in Pakistan, we think banning many Islamic religious practices publicly due to public nuisance.

Actually they allow and they just banned in public. The OP title is misleading

The way it works is unique. Tho 'officially' the Christians cannot worship openly, they may do so secretly. There are usually what we refer to as bunker churches or basement congregations. Btw, the active missionaries in Brunei are Korean evangelicals (7th day adventists, presbyterians, born again et al). So the government there is trying to put pressure in their recent passing of Shariah law to prevent further conversion. Tho Christianity is a minority religion, it is a fast growing religion in that country....

It seems clear that Muslims aren't to be allowed to celebrate Christmas, yes?

Its for the Bruneians who are outwardly Muslim, but are secretly Christian.

You must also study the contiguous region. Eastern Malaysian state of Sarawak surrounds Brunei. A LARGE percentage of Eastern Malaysians (particularly Sabahans) are actually Chinese-Malaysians and they are mostly Christian. So there is a large influence of Christianity coming to Brunei from Sabah and also Sarawak.

I don't understand....why would Muslims celebrate xmas? it is not an islamic festival. We have our Eids and we celebrate those and clearly christians and jews do not celebrate our Eids. so what is so surprising.

To be honest, all this religious pressures are double edge swords. People should be allowed to practice what they want. But for the Sultanate of Brunei, i suppose the Sultan has a role to safeguard Islam's preeminence in the Sultanate. If he does not then there's no reason why Malaysia should not just subsume Brunei as part of ....Sarawak....

That seems to be not true because Christianity is dying everywhere. My friend, if you come to Europe you will find that most of the Churches have been closed down due to insufficient members, many have been converted into shopping centres, cinemas, restaurants and even Mosques. If the missionaries have anything to do, they should first try to protect their home where atheism has taken over.

@Indos

I was pleasantly surprised that Brunei is not part of the Saudi alliance while sad that Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives are. As expected Indonesia is not part of the alliance.

Why do some Jews buy Xmas trees and even more participate in Valentines Day? To enjoy the holiday spirit, of course. This is what the Sultan has banned. He has become the Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

What can Brunei possibly contribute , if her entire population is about 700,000? Do you even know that the Royal Bruneian Army has in its employ Nepalese Gurkhas?

2nd Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles; formed by renaming the 1st Bn, 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles.

Our good man! This less to do with the 'corrupted' faith of disbelievers than to cover up the Sultan's own lack of morals. Awash in petro-dollars he has done little than offer peanuts to improve the lives of his citizens.

There are millions of ways to be corrupted, even Eid itself is becoming the corporatized capitalistic holiday the Sultan is attempting to banish.

We have Muslims celebrating the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)!

You do know the origins of Christmas? The Christians merely adopted the holiday to celebrate their falsehood of Jesus (PBUH) being born on a winter day, when the Bible itself claims he was born on a hot summer night.

EDIT: Correction on the lack of civilian lives status. The country is the equivalent of Saudi Arabia with more modern laws.
