24 dead in five consecutive Sukkur explosions – The Express Tribune

SUKKUR: At least 23 intelligence officials and one civilian were killed in five consecutive explosions that took place in Barrage Colony, Sukkur on Wednesday evening, Express News reported.

Up to 10 gunmen have attacked the heavily guarded compound and detonated four bombs, said Masood Bangash, the deputy superintendent of police in Sukkur.

He said the local offices of the Inter-Services Intelligence, the Pakistani military intelligence force located in the colony, seemed to be the main target.

Initial reports suggest that the first blast, which was reportedly the biggest, occurred when militants had an explosive-laden truck crash into one of the houses.

“One of the militants was a suicide bomber,” said DIG Sukkur Javed Odho.

The suspected militants then proceeded to throw hand grenades at the houses leading to successive explosions.

The area also houses an imam bargah, Commissioner House and Rangers’ headquarters.

“The subsequent blasts occurred as people were moving towards the site of the explosion after the first explosion,” reported Express News correspondent Sajjad Ali Shah.

The roof of the houses in the area, including the DIG house collapsed due to the intensity of the blast. It is being feared that people are trapped underneath the rubble.

Rescue teams are taking the injured to the hospital.

Heavy contingents of police and rangers have reached the blast site, but they could not reach the DIG House immediately because of the repeated explosions.

Firing ensued immediately after the explosions and it is being feared that the four to eight suspected militants are still present in the area.

Two of the deceased were identified as Ahsan Malik and intelligence official, Muhammad Azeez who were shifted to the hospital.

The nature and intensity of the explosion is yet to be determined.

The security officials are preparing to carry out an extensive attack on the militants present.

It was unclear who carried out the attack, but previous such high-profile operations have always been claimed by the Taliban.
Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the terror attack and directed the authorities concerned to provide the best medical treatment to the injured.
Security officials launched a counter attack on the militants
Firing ensured between the security officials and the suspected militants immediately after the blasts.
As a result, the security officials readied to carry out an extensive attack on the militants.
Of the 5 militants suspected to be in the area, three were killed in the cross-fire while the two blew themselves up in a suicide blast, reported a Ranger’s personnel.
The local residents moved out of the area during the operation.

Not his fault IMO. Even I saw 24 casualties earlier, but I think due to a reporting error, ET changed the no. of casualties.

According to Rangers spokesman, only one man has died in this incident, and he was a servant at the DIG house.

One VIED rammed the wall of the compound, 1 more suicide bomber got in and exploded. Three other terrorists went in and were killed after a short encounter.

.
I still believe there is something fishy in the numbers. Just like the actual damage to the SAAB AEW planes was underplayed in the beginning. The gap of 24 and 4 is too high plus the magnitude of the attack was too high. Specially since ET also gave the breakup of 23 intelligence officials and 1 civilian getting killed.

.
It is being reported now that Deputy Director ISI have also embraced Martyrdom in the attack. (not confirmed as media is notorious for false coverages and creating panic) May he and all the other people killed in this act of violence against Pakistan rest in peace.
Thankfully this time the rangers showed good response and the militants were dealt with. the building complex have been cleared now.

Considering it was a suicidal attack by them, the loss were kept to minimum. However, a life lost is a big loss and we may have lost 5 to 10 brave men in line of duty. All prayers for them. may there souls rest in peace, Ameen

A point to ponder is that this attack was carried by the same Taliban that the same ISI have been blamed for supporting! :hitwall:

.
It is now being updated that the Deputy Director ISI is safe and well. (Thanks God)
Major Zeeshan have been reportedly martyred in the attack in the operation following the first suicide blast.

The attack was carried soon after Iftar during the Magrib Prayers. It is being reported that the attack was to free some terrorists that were held at the center for interrogation who were captured a few days back. In this regard, the attack was dealt with and the terrorists failed to reach there objective. The initial blast done by a van carrying explosives left a 8m crater outside the building wall, destroying the wall which was used by attackers to enter the building. Rapid response by police and rangers ensured that the terrorists were not able to achieve the main target!
