Suicide Blast in Mardan Army Training Centre

PESHAWAR: At least 14 security officials were killed in a blast in the northwestern Pakistani town of Mardan on Thursday, DawnNews reported.

The blast took place inside the Punjab Regiment Centre in the city’s cantonment area, police said.

Rescue officials were heading toward the site of the blast. Police have cordoned off the area.

ISLAMABAD: A boy in a school uniform blew himself up at a Pakistani army recruitment centre in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Mardan on Thursday, killing 20 cadets, military and security officials said.

The attack challenged official assertions that army offensives had weakened al Qaeda-linked Taliban militants waging a campaign to destabilise Pakistan’s US-backed government.

The brazen bombing suggested militants are regrouping after a lull in major attacks. Militant operations in recent months have been mostly sectarian and have not focused on military targets.

“The bomber struck recruits when cadets were busy in their morning training,” a military official told Reuters. At least 20 people were wounded.

The boy apparently walked into the compound, officials said.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack at the Punjab Regiment Centre in the town of Mardan.

“Such cowardly attacks cannot affect the morale of the security agencies and the resolve of the nation to eradicate terrorism,” he said in a statement.

Gilani’s government is under pressure on several fronts. It is trying to revive a stagnant economy and public discontent is growing over official corruption, rampant poverty and power cuts.

The United States, which provides billions of dollars in aid, wants Pakistan to step up its fight against militant groups who cross the border to attack Western forces in Afghanistan.

But Pakistan’s military is already stretched fighting homegrown militants.

This is the worst part of these incidents. I hate these stereotype statements of our lame PM, President, politicians and Ministers after every statement.

Education can't do anything with them. They are sick and dumb to the core. A better cure is a strong local intelligence network + proper and more capable law enforcing agencies + an effective internal security policy + elimination of terror export from Afghanistan.

well it goes to show two things, first should we kill a school boy approaching an installation, or take a chance? secondly, release Raymond Davis and the blasts will stop again. Every time we have some friction with U.S, the blasts start occurring. The whole Army knows that Indians and British are training Blauch militants in training camps in Afghanistan, obviously they cant do it without U.S blessing

You've seen a girl doing suicide because her husband was killed by a terrorist (Raymond Davis) and that's how terrorists are being produced by terrorists

I don't think the parents will know most of the time. Those trainers will make sure of that.

One more thing this is also not clear whether the school boy was part of attack or was just used as tool for attack... may be some bomb attached to his body was exploded by someone else and the boy was also among the victims
