SWAT: Maulana Sufi Mohammad announced end of Swat peace in protest.

Talking to media, Sufi Mohammad criticized the federal government and said provincial government is sincere regarding peace deal, however, federal government is not in favour of Nifaz-e-Shariat. He said peace is not possible without Shariat.

Maulana Sufi Mohammad said he is not withdrawing from peace deal, however, ending camp in protest.

He urged President Zardari to implement Shariat as soon as possible and said government will be responsible if law and order situation deteriorate in the area.

A deal between the Pakistani government and the Taliban to restore peace in the Swat Valley on Thursday collapsed with a radical cleric withdrawing from the pact he helped broker, reports said.

"Maulana Sufi Mohammad announced his withdrawal from Swat peace deal on Thursday," Geo TV reported.

The cleric had helped broker the deal between the North West Frontier Province government and the Taliban under which the militants had agreed to lay down their arms in return for the imposition of Sharia laws in the area.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, who had given the go-ahead for the deal, had said he would ratify it only if peace returned to the picturesque valley, once a popular tourist destination.

Zardari, however, has been under immense pressure to turn down the deal, particularly after the emergence last week of a video depicting a 17-year-old girl being publicly flogged over an alleged illicit relationship. Though the incident was denied, it sparked universal outrage.

The deal with the Taliban had attracted international condemnation as it was seen to be bowing to the militants.

Its great, but I'm interested to know whats the plan? I had a feeling that the government was going to give clinching Swat back from the extremists another try.

You mean government is going to ask PA to fight Taliban again, that is just one part of the strategy to deal with TTP.
The other aspects have been entirely ignored in the GOP's campaign so far and i really do not see much changing with what we have heard lately.

Let us hope things change this time, it may well be the last time.

.
first of all its not the deal which collapsed. he has only closed his camps to protest against the gov not signin that document. its only a pressure tactic. peace deal is still intact.
now either gov will end up signin the document in few days or else back to square one. those who want this peace deal to go should really go back and look at wat was happenin in swat few weeks back. ask any swati if he wants this peace deal to go to not.

.

Sure, but we need control over the region to increase literacy to bring in some development. Remember in areas like Swat the local population isn't with the Taliban. The Taliban over there are Arabs and Uzbeks at the grunt level.

Step 1 would be reclaiming Swat. Step 2 would be the other steps.

This limp Govt. dosnt have the will to take some hard decisions! it will continue to compromise the integrity of the country!:pakistan:

no. talibans over there are not arabs. these are those ppl who were once part of TNSM and later sided with talibans.
secondly after this peace deal, childrens had started to go to their schools. ppl were back in business. policemen had gone back to police stations. now lets not expect that law and order will be fully restored in no time. it takes time for things to fall back to their respective places. we have got a problem with talibans and not TNSM. then y not strengthen TNSM which didnt raise arm and carried out a peaceful struggle??

sir lets not simply blame our gov for not having the will. it was our beloved army which convinced the gov to strike a deal. and i dont see anything wrong with that

Why? Because TNSM is not Government of Pakistan. It wasn't a peace deal, it was terms of surrender.

Then incidents like Chand Bibi happened. I don't ever want to see anyone else impose their writ on Swat other than the elected government of Pakistan - elected by Swat, under Pakistani law, not the Shariat that TNSM calls Shariat.

We can't pussyfoot our way around this thing. We have to be committed. I've been to Swat many times, its unimaginable to think those people are doing this. They were a tourist friendly lot, they are used to seeing women on their streets, in their restaurants.

This, Nifaz-e-Shaytaniat, deal is completely ridiculous and nothing short of a surrender. We must reclaim the land back and then WE will implement what Swatis want, not what foreigners with guns demand.

.
Right after Buner standoff that was expected. Further expansion in swat mullah game plan. He need one hellfire dose.
