Sudan Acquires Russian-built Su-35 Fighter Jets

Sudan becomes the first Arab country to acquire Russian-made fourth generation Su-35 fighter jets.

The first batch of jets were delivered on Monday, just ahead of President Omar Ahmed al-Bashir’s first visit to Moscow this week. However, the exact number of jets delivered has not been made official.

The fighters will be used to “contribute to the consolidation of Sudan’s defenses and provide it protection from any threat,” Sudanese deputy air force commander, Salahuddin Abdul Khaliq Saeed, told Sputnik News. The deal was announced in March.

President al-Bashir's visit to Moscow is expected to yield deals in mining, oil and advanced security industries

Sukhoi-35 is a 4 ++ generation fighter aircraft with controlled thrust vector engines. The aircraft uses fifth generation technology that ensures superiority over foreign-produced fighters of a similar class.

Sudan has become the first Arab country to acquire the fourth generation Su-35 fighter jets from Russia just ahead of President Omar Ahmed al-Bashir’s first visit to Moscow on Thursday.

The first batch of jets were delivered late last week are considered the backbone air superiority fighters for the Russian airforce. The UAE signed a similar agreement earlier this year to develop the same jets with Russia.

Sudanese deputy air force commander, Salahuddin Abdul Khaliq Saeed, announced the deal in March. He told Sputnik news agency that the aircraft will contribute to the consolidation of Sudan’s defenses and will provide it protection from any threat.

The number of fighters delivered, however, was not released.

Thursday’s visit by Bahsir to Moscow will include a number of high level agreements expected between the two countries, according to government officials.

Deals in mining, oil and advanced security industries are expected to be signed according to the vice president of the Foreign Relations Committee at the Sudanese National Assembly, Dr Fathi Madibou.

Madibou said that Sudan aspires to benefit from Russia in developing its various resources and believes that it is a real partner to support the economy and national security.

“The visit will witness the signing of important agreements in the fields of oil and mining and benefit from Russian technology and will open the way for Russia to benefit more from our diverse resources,” Madibou told Al Arabiya English.

It still remains unclear if Bashir is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin as the Kremlin only confirmed his visit but not his meetings.

Madibibou said the development of relations with Russia does not affect Sudan’s relations with other countries, especially the United States.

He added that Sudan has decided after its international isolation to build its foreign relations based on mutual interests, whether political, economic or security, and “Russia is a pivotal country in the world and the region, and how great we do not go to it”.

Former minister of state of foreign affairs, Kamal Ismail, told Al Arabiya English that Sudan seeks to promote good relations with Russia and develop them, stressing that his country “values Russia’s contribution to Sudan”.

He noted that Sudan aspires during Bashir’s visit to Moscow on Thursday to push this relationship further in the fields of industry and trade, mining and oil.

The three-day visit to Moscow by the Sudanese president will include a delegation of senior ministers and Sudanese officials, to discuss various issues with their Russian counterparts.

Sudan military receives new Russian fighter jets, weeks after U.S. lifts sanctions

Sudan has taken delivery of the first tranche of advanced Russian-made fighter jets into its military arsenal, only weeks after the Trump administration opted to relieve Khartoum from some of the harshest international political and economic sanctions levied against any country,

Sudanese military officials declined to comment on how many Russian-made Su-35 fighters were delivered on Monday, or how many of the fighter jets in total Khartoum agreed to purchase in the deal with Moscow, inked in March.

The fighters will be used to “contribute to the consolidation of Sudan’s defenses and provide it protection from any threat,” Sudanese deputy air force commander, Salahuddin Abdul Khaliq Saeed, told Sputnik News. Monday’s deliveries make Sudan the first Arab nation to fly the Russian-made fighters in its military.

News of the weapons delivery comes days before President Omar Ahmed al-Bashir’s first diplomatic visit to Moscow since the lifting of international sanctions.

“The visit will witness the signing of important agreements in the fields of oil and mining and benefit from Russian technology and will open the way for Russia to benefit more from our diverse resources,” Fathi Madibou, vice president of the Foreign Relations Committee at the Sudanese National Assembly, told Al Arabiya English Monday.

Kharotum’s overtures toward Russia come after the Trump White House took the landmark step of ending sanctions against Sudan, which had been in place since 1996. The decision came after years of lobbying by Khartoum to lift the sanctions, tied to International Criminal Court charges of war crimes and genocide in connection to the country’s brutal campaign to suppress rebel groups in the western region of Darfur.

The country still remains on the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism, but recent reports claim the White House is also considering lifting that designation as well in the coming months.

Prior to the administration’s decision, Khartoum had sought to portrayed itself as a key ally in the U.S. war on terrorism, passing on vital information to U.S. and allied intelligence agencies on activities of the Islamic State in Libya, Egypt, Somalia and elsewhere in northern and East Africa.

Sudan has a long history of supporting … countries in the region and outside the region” with military, intelligence and other operations, Sudanese Ambassador Maowia Osman Khalid said in an exclusive interview with The Washington Times last May.

Sudan is “a close partner with the United States in counterterrorism [operations] around the globe,” Mr. Khalid said at the time. “Our role is not limited; rather, it could be expanded in different capacities and missions,” he added, noting Khartoum could increase support on the ground in conjunction with U.S. forces.

No one should forget the Usraeli air attack on Sudan..to apparently destroy munitions plants, presumably because Sudan was providing the Palestinian resistance with some of these munitions..
