The Surface to Air Missile AKASH with indigenous radio frequency seeker against target Banshee, has been successfully launched from the Launch Complex-III at ITR Chandipur today at 1338 hrs. The Radars, telemetry and electro-optical systems along the coast have tracked and monitored all the health parameters of the missile. The launch operations were witnessed by
Director General (Missiles), DRDO and Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri (SA to RM) Dr. G Satheesh Reddy; Director DRDL, Shri MSR Prasad; Program Director, Shri G Chandra Mouli; Director ITR, Dr. BK Das and other top DRDO scientists.
SA to RM congratulated all the DRDO scientists and Armed Forces for this success.

This missile is being inducted into Army as Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM). This is the first Surface to Air Missile with indigenous seeker that has been test fired. With this success, India has achieved the capability of making any type of Surface to Air Missile.

New Delhi, Surface-to-air missile Akash was successfully test fired on Tuesday with an indigenous radio frequency seeker, an official said.

The missile was successfully launched from the Launch Complex-III at Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha around 1.40 p.m.

"The radars, telemetry and electro-optical systems along the coast have tracked and monitored all the health parameters of the missile," said a statement.

This is the first surface-to-air missile with indigenous seeker that has been test fired. "With this success, India has achieved the capability of making any type of surface-to-air missile," the statement said.

The launch operations were witnessed by the Director General (Missiles) in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister, G. Satheesh Reddy; Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), M.S.R. Prasad; Programme Director G. Chandra Mouli; Director Integrated Test Range (ITR) B.K. Das and other top DRDO scientists.

This missile is being inducted into Army as Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM).

It is great. This missile is most likely to have dual impulse motor with 50 KM range. This is a great addition to Indian missile arsenal. Vietnam was asking for old Akash technology. We can give that to vietnam now since we have a better technology missile is available with us now.

The only lacking area in India's missile technology , the seeker is now getting strong. we are heading towards 100% indigenous technology by 20222.

The indigenous radio frequency seeker has been developed at a cost of approximately $7 million and it will make the Akash more accurate and increase its range.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — In a demonstration of the country's indigenous capability, Indian defense scientists successfully launched the Akash surface-to-air missile with indigenous radio frequency seeker on Tuesday afternoon. With this launch, the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) can now claim that it can make any type of surface-to-air missile. The missile was tested against the unmanned Banshee aircraft.

“This is the first Surface to Air Missile with indigenous seeker that has been test fired. With this success, India has achieved the capability of making any type of Surface to Air Missile,” DRDO said in a statement. This missile is being inducted into Army as Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM).

The 5.8-meter long missile having a launch weight of 720 kilograms is capable of engaging aerial threats up to a distance of 30 kilometers. It can fly at supersonic speeds of around 2.5 Mach and can reach an altitude of 18 kilometers.

Presently, two squadrons of Akash missile systems are operational in the Indian Air Force. Earlier this year, the Indian defense ministry canceled the short-range surface-to-air missile system competition in favor of the Akash missile system. Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, Russian Rosonboronexport, and Swedish Saab were competing for the tender. The Indian defense ministry had allocated $2.8 billion for the procurement of two regiments of Akash missile systems for the Indian Army. A regiment equates to 240/288 launchers and 625/750 missiles.

So my claim was correct all along, it was using an imported seeker. :rofl:

It uses the same seeker as the one in Astra A2A missile.
