Story Number: NNS150420-12 Release Date: 4/20/2015 10:52:00 AM

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Brian G. Reynolds, Commander, Submarine Group 7 Deputy Public Affairs Officer

FLEET ACTIVITIES YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Rear Adm. William R. Merz, Commander, Submarine Group 7 (COMSUBGRU 7), met with representatives from the Indonesian submarine force in Surabaya, Indonesia, on April 14 in order to strengthen a dynamic working relationship between the two navies.

The primary focus of the staff talks was to establish routine periodic regional engagements and operations to integrate the Indonesian submarine force as a partner and ally in the Pacific.

The engagements will include training opportunities between the two navies that will focus on integrating U.S. and Indonesian submarine force capabilities.

The staff talks followed a table top Simulated Submarine Casualty Exercise (SMASHEX), where COMSUBGRU 7, U.S. Navy Submarine Rescue Command, and International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office worked with the Indonesian navy during a simulated submarine rescue training.

The Indonesian navy is the largest navy in Southeast Asia based on the number of active personnel and ships.

Indonesian Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Indonesian Navy (Indonesian: Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Laut, TNI–AL) was founded on September 10, 1945. Its role is to patrol Indonesia's immense coastline, to enforce and patrol the territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Indonesia, to protect Indonesia's maritime strategic interests, to protect the islands surrounding Indonesia, and to defend against seaborne threats.

The Indonesian Navy is the largest navy in South East Asia based on the number of active personnel and ships. As of 2009, the Indonesian Navy had about 75,000 active personnel and more than 150 vessels in active service. The Indonesian Navy is one of a few navies in the region backed by a substantial domestic defence industry, marine corps, and armed with supersonic missiles and attack submarines.

i think your Navy has more capability in this game than us right now, but we will catching up real soon with more additional procurement, improving our Human resources pool, Joint Exercises and Joint training with another Navy in the region

there is always possibility, as Indonesian procurement programme for defense related sector is usually done with open tender rules, only small cases be done with direct appointment.

How is Indonesia relationship with Chine? does it also need to improve its forces against CHinese claim?
