This is bad news for any country wishing to enter the 'stealth' arena. Soviet / Russia is no amateur in the aviation world. They have consistently produced many -- not merely some -- of the world's finest aerodynamicists. But the cancellation of the Su-57 program is an obvious hint that making a viable challenger to the current American 'stealth' platforms is not something that can be done 'on the cheap'. There is a reason why the F-22, F-35, and the B-2 cost the amount they do, and that reason is understandably classified.

Have no doubt, China is NOT taking this news with cheer. When people thinks of aviation firsts, innovations, and pushing the limits, China is not in that list. China must be thinking of the worst case scenario for the Russian Su-57 pilots over Syria -- that they were harassed by the F-22s without knowing where the Americans were. And the Americans in their F-22s do have a history of such aviation trolling. Ask the Iranians. The J-20 is untested outside of China and the J-20 is the Su-57's peer in all aspects of development and timeline. And Russia gave up on the Su-57.

by looking at the su-57, I think the original idea was a scam trying to pull money out of the Indian's pocket. maybe at the last minutes the Indians realize that nothing is considered as VLO about this plane so the indian pulled out. once the indian pull out the Russian realize that there will be no buyer for the plane so they cancel it.

this is the best news of the day

As with all hearsay, it is the best for everyone to wait until more authoritative evidence comes to light. It is quite unlikely that the Russian brass will pull the plug on the sole future platform of the VVS on the cusp of its IOC without at least having a contingency program to fall back on.

What I suspect is that the Su-57 program is undergoing a significant shift, either in configuration or in role, and that there has been a mistranslation. It wouldn't be the first time that false news have been posted as a direct result of spotty translation, misinterpretation, or a hodge-podge of both.

SU-57 is a decent fighter and beats anything that India currently operates and all 4+ generator fighters available in the market. The issue was that it was not stealthy and powerful enough to compete with F-22. Also, Russia did not want to share the technology with India just like France did not want to share the technology of Rafale with India.

India pulled out of the program to avoid heavy investments with no ToT. India was open to buying the fighter outright once the fighter was mature enough with Item 30 engine.

there you go, the key is not stealthy enough, so what does india want now? f35?

enough of this su57 bullshit, it has no foreign buyer, it keeps having a bunch of excuses on why it's not stealthy enough, it flew combat against the f22 in Syria and still india does not believe that su57 is anything close to the f22 and that's terrible news for su57.

My opinion is that the -57 was a rushed 'stealth' program. I would not go so harsh as to call it a 'scam' but Russia did need cooperative partners like the F-35 program is. My take is that the program failed -- assuming this article is true -- is because of the 'stealth' technical standards set by the Americans. Am not gloating, or just maybe a wee bit, but the standards are very high. With that is cost per unit. Russia and India were just too small a group to bear the cost of meeting those standards.

Again...Assuming this article is true...

If the -57 was anywhere over Syria, I am convinced that our respective air forces met and it was one-sided. The F-22s would not give themselves away visually. The -57's supporters have always touted the jet's many 'low freq' radar positioned at various locations on the jet. What happened? These sub-systems are supposed to defeat the F-22. Am guessing that the F-22s tested these claims and found them severely short.

When I was active duty and on the F-111 ( RAF Upper Heyford), our EF-111 brothers can surreptitiously electromagnetically 'buzz' anyone within range. A few short EM bursts within the correct freq bands of the target's radar warning receiver (RWR) system. Each burst was too short in duration for the target's RWR system to focus on a specific direction, but the few bursts were coherent enough for the target to know he was being probed. A longer train of bursts can also be used to allow the target to know the general source direction. The tactic was called 'herding' because it usually compelled the target to change direction to escape a potential missile threat. A pair of EF-111s can create delays of mission goal or even outright confusion in the enemy flight.

If the Russian pilots reported something like this happened to them, the -57 might as well be dead.

And I recently came across news that Russia will continue the flanker series development and SU-40 might be in works after the SU-35.

There are also rumors of a Mig-31 replacement fighter exceeding its high speed performance.

There is pretty strong debate that stealth is over rated and its better to have high performance detection, targeting and jamming capability rather than stealth.

I guess, both India and Russia saved a lot of money in the end.

For India especially, we were not getting anything despite the money we put in and it was stupid on our part to expect critical technologies where others put decades of effort on.
