PM performs launching of STUS
KARACHI, Jan 12 (APP)- Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani here on Monday performed the launching of the first Small Tanker-cum-Utility Ship (STUS) at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW). In his address on the occasion he termed this as a remarkable achievement and said that this speaks volumes of the new vigor and zeal in KSEW.
He also congratulated the KSEW for their early achievement of launching milestone and appreciated the efforts of its architects, engineers and workers involved to accomplish the prestigious task.
The Prime Minister was pleased to note that this project is progressing ahead of the planned schedule.
He hoped that with the speedy pace of construction, new ships will join the Navy fleet earlier than the schedule time and thus contribute in enhancing our fleets capabilities.
Gillani said that it will go a long way in establishing credibility of KSEW as a reliable builder with assured timely deliveries of cost effective and quality ships.
He appreciated Pakistan Navy in supporting and showing their trust in indigenous construction of their ships and submarines at Karachi Shipyard.
I urge our maritime sector including ports to do the same and have their ships built here as a matter of preference and contribute in strengthening our shipbuilding sector rather than seeking foreign options, the Prime Minister remarked.
He said that KSEW is a national asset and is contributing tremendously in fulfilling our Naval defence requirements as well as requirements of our Maritime sector.
It is a very important component of the Ministry of Defence Production and with every event, like the one of today (Monday), the Government feels ever more confident, said the Prime Minister.
Yousuf Raza Gillani said that he was very much impressed by the turn around of the KSEW in such a short span of time. Today the entire Yard is buzzing with activity. It proves that with will and dedication, challenging tasks can easily be achieved.
He pointed out that shipbuilding is an industry which can act as a catalyst for overall industrial development, leading to economic development, large scale employment generation and poverty alleviation. This is a labour intensive industry and best suited for developing countries like ours.
The Prime Minister said that Allah Almighty has blessed us with a great commercially strategic location at the mouth of the Gulf and abundant hardworking manpower best suited for shipbuilding industry.
He said that they need to take advantage of these strengthens. Accordingly, the Government has adopted a vision for the new shipyards and the development of shipbuilding industry on grand scale. We will move in this direction at a very fast pace. So those involved in shipbuilding have a great future and prospects in the time ahead, he said.
The Prime Minister urged those working with KSEW and related with these activities to work with dedication for the progress of the KSEW and the shipbuilding industry in the country.
Together we will ensure that Pakistan becomes a leading shipbuilding country in the region in line with its true potential and ideal location.
Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ebad Khan, Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Naval Chief Admiral Noman Bashir were also present at the launching ceremony.
