KARACHI: A first of its kind street library was inaugurated in Karachi on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah on Wednesday.

The project is the initiative of Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shallwani. The library is situated near the Metropole building.

Sindh Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah was the chief guest at the occasion.

While addressing the ceremony, Iftikhar Ali Shallwani said he has tasked deputy commissioners of each district to set up street libraries after selecting their venues.

He said that the administration is bringing improvements in Karachi over directives of Sindh chief minister and chief secretary.

He said that the initiative was taken to revive the culture of book reading which should be appreciated and promoted.

The chief secretary praised efforts of the Commissioner Karachi for taking a creative initiative.

Wooden bookshelves have been installed alongside the decorated wall surrounding the Metropole building in between the portraits of the Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and other members who had taken part in Pakistan’s movement.

The library will operate on the “take a book and leave a book” basis.

Street Library....near Metropole....Who the F**** decides things in Pakistan
A Library should be in the residential area, where Students can go to study or elders can walk there on the weekends. Role of a Library in internet age has changed, a Library is used less for books and more as place to study

.
We should have mobile libraries, which visit villages once a week. Give the poor and the rural folk access to books.

.
Metropole ? Nobody reads there I guess. It should have been in nazimabad or FB area somewhere. I guess it's just to show off the tourists - a dummy library

. .
Pakistanis don't read books anymore --- there was a time when Pakistanis also used to read books on rent.
