HYDERABAD: Union minister of state for defence M M Pallam Raju laid the foundation stone for Akash project building at Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) in Medak district on Friday.
The company bagged an order worth Rs 14,000 crore for supply of Akash Weapon system to the Indian Army.
Speaking on the occasion, Pallam Raju emphasised the need for timely delivery of the products to the Army.
Chairman and managing director of BDL Maj Gen Ravi Khetarpal said that setting up facilities for Akash missiles was one of the major steps of BDL. PK Mishra, joint secretary (missile systems) and others were present.

don't care about money......u just only give best to Armed forces

when AKASH MK 2 is coming????????

I don't like to much ceremonialism that is present in our country. We must cut down on ceremonialism at least in defense and move on. Just start the making of the building already. We need more than 1,000 batteries of this and such a big ceremony is being made for just its stone-laying.

1000 batteries!!Don't you think that'll be a bit too much??By the way,I think the present order for 3000 (1000 IAF+2000 IA) Akash MkI SAMs is logical enough as the MkII with increased range and velocity and better guidence and ECCM is already under development and will most probably get ready before the completion of the present order. So the improved version should be inducted in larger numbers.Just my thought.
REGARDS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Akash mk2 will be tested in 2012 followed by few more tests. I think by 2014 it will be in service.

we need them fast and hope the building gets completed in time so that the production can start:coffee:

you wish...
when has india done anything fast when it comes to defence production.

HAL Dhruv, for example. Brought to production, with the right quality and now exported.

Malaysia has already shown interest in Akash (Mk 1), though actual exports of Akash are quite some time to go.

There is no point, going the China way ..... churning out half-baked J-10, JH-7 or JF-17 "fourth gen" fighter with erroneous Fly-by-wire programming in all three. What they get in return ... crashes, crashes and crashes !

Better to build strong designs, test vigorously and ensure quality control in production.

We can and should focus on QUALITY, since we can buy from abroad for immediate needs .... till the design, testing and production stages of our indigenous platforms mature.

QUALITY is first, then speed.

Sorry to screw the party. This is a new dedicated facility by the BDL to make Akash for the army. While BEL already making the missile for air force.

The new BDL facility will have capacity to build 500 missiles per year.
