Colleges in general tame you and teach you to stay in the box what these drop-outs do - they think out of the box.
This is what Steve did.He dared to bring in a product thinking from user end perspective not from engineers or developers perspective. One can say that whatever project he took on, turned into gold. Look at Sale and launch of Lisa,PIXAR sold for 8 billion dollars,NEXT from where MAC OS X got its inspiration, then on his return to Apple the "iMac" . iPod revolutionised how we listen to music. Then came iPhone which gave smart phone a new meaning - rest is histroy.
