A monument to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was taken down in St Petersburg on October 31 but reports of its removal surfaced only on Monday.

The two-metre (6.5 feet) high iPhone, the biggest such monument in the world, belonged to a group of companies called ZEFS. It was set up in January 2013 in the yard of the National Research University of Information Technologies (ITMO University).

The owners of the monument have said they were motivated in removing the structure for two major reasons. The first referred to last week's announcement by Apple CEO Tim Cook that he was openly gay. ZEFS have reportedly stated that they were seeking to comply with a law that bans the promotion of "nontraditional sexual relations among minors." The second reason was recent leaks by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden which indicated that Apple devices were used by US intelligence agencies to spy on people worldwide.

The monument, in the shape of a giant iPhone 4G, was equipped with an interactive touch screen that provided information about the founder of Apple. On the back side of the monument there was a QR-code, which forwarded to a website dedicated to Steve Jobs.

GJ, like americans would make monuments for our dead scientists & interpretenuers or other non americans. We should question our self why we did it even in the first place.

You mean like this Albert Einstein monument in DC? Or what about the Nikola Tesla monument at Niagara Falls? How about the statue of Goethe and Schiller in Syracuse? Statues and monuments are for people that made a big impact on a nation, whether they are native to or even citizens of that nation. This act, against the Steve Jobs statue, is a joke and is indicative of the overriding sense of misguided nationalism that plagues modern day Russia.

And if he had not said that he is a pervert, then many would consider him a man worthy to have a monument in the old capital of Russia.

Why should a businessman get a monument anyway? not good to compare scientists with businessmen

Why not businessmen? Henry Ford has a monument in Detroit, he helped that city grow and began the US car industry. J.D. Rockefeller has a monument and a parkway dedicated in his honor. Monuments are for people that make an impact, scientist or not.

He was an American businessman. You wouldn't want foreign businessman monuments in America. Scientists are different because I believe them to be without borders; most of them don't work for just their country, but rather the whole world. They also usually don't work because of money of fame, but rather the betterment of humanity.

Anyway, this news is fake, so the thread can be closed. Removal of Steve Jobs memorial due to 'gay propaganda' law turns out to be PR hoax — RT News

Glad to see the news was fake, it would be a disappointment otherwise, but I would also like to say that the US does have statues of non-Americans, or Americans who are not native. Also this is an interesting fact, but foreign nations have monuments of past US presidents. Greece has a statue of Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower is in England, JFK in Cameroon, and Bill Clinton in Kosovo. Monuments are for those that make an impact on a nation, whether or not they are citizens.

Meanwhile, the head of the company that owns the memorial reportedly said that he is not against reinstalling the piece if it would be possible to use the phone memorial to “send a message to the US rejecting the use of Apple devices.”
