It's the biggest statue in the world , nearly twice the height of the statue of liberty .

RSS and BJP are huge fans of Sardar Patel though he had banned RSS for few months after the assignation Gandhi .

No doubt that both Gandhi and Nehru contributed a lot. Patel also contributed the same amount if not more (its more actually, he carved out the present shape of India).
Unfortunately in congress time all the limelight was shed on Nehru and Gandhi and patel got lost to only few pages in history books which many students don't even remember.
Nobody is taking away the work of Gandhi and Nehru, just Patel's contribution is being recognised.

Its called statue of unity because of patel's role in unifying modern india from a patchwork of hundreds of princely states after british transfer of power either through reason or force(junagadh,hyderabad).In this he was extremely successful as nearly all princely states joined to form a contiguous indian state rather than jinnahs dream of a string of muslim states within india(bhopal,awadh,hyderabad) and surrounding it.Though i think Subhas bose deserves a statue more than any other,patel still played an important role.Ultimately this sort of expense is unnecessary for any man,but if gujarat's people are willing to pay the taxes to fund it,more power to them.It is certainly a very fine engineering feat.And proud thing is it was done by an indian company larsen and toubro.

Congratulations, India since independence has become a first world state. Sarcasm aside the whole sub continent has done crap on HDI front. Congratulate yourself on keeping a nation united by force.

He did not force anything. Jinnah always stood for a separate land or special status for muslims. Sardar patel just said no to any special status for muslims.

His letter to Nehru warning him about future chinese invasion showed his knowledge in real politics.
