Dozens defy Missouri curfew in riot-hit Ferguson

BBC

Jay Nixon, governor of the US state of Missouri, has imposed the curfew until 05:00 (10:00 GMT).

The move comes after a week of violent clashes between heavily armed local police and protesters.

Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead on a street in Ferguson on 9 August.

Hundreds of protesters gathered on the main road in Ferguson in poor weather conditions hours before the curfew was due to go into force on Saturday evening.

Many left peacefully but others shouted that they would not abide by the curfew.

Police warned the remaining demonstrators that they would be arrested unless they left the area.

They then fired smoke bombs, after which the protesters appeared to leave.

"The curfew is going to make things worse," protester Phonso Scott, 24, told Reuters news agency.

"I think the cops are going to get violent tonight, but they can't lock us all up."

'Find and maintain peace'
Governor Nixon said that although many protesters were making themselves heard peacefully, he would not allow a handful of looters to endanger the community.

"We must first have and maintain peace. This is a test. The eyes of the world are watching," Mr Nixon said. "We cannot allow the ill will of the few to undermine the good will of the many."

Obama: “We Are Supposed to Be Better than That”

A journalist from the Huffington Post and another from The Washington Post were arrested while doing work in a McDonald’s on Wednesday night. “Here in the United States of America, there is no reason police should be bullying or arresting journalists who are just trying to do their jobs,” Obama said. He also remarked that “there is never an excuse” for violence against police officers, or “for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests.”

Rep. John Lewis, a civil-rights hero, (LOL) offered perhaps the most striking comments of all, arguing that Obama should declare martial law. “So my own feeling, right now, is that President Obama should use the authority of his office to declare martial law,” Lewis said . “Federalize the Missouri National Guard to protect people as they protest.”

This is not China or Russia or Syria. This is America, :taz::crazy: :offpost:and in this country we have a right to protest in a peaceful, orderly non-violent fashion, and the press should be free to cover these protests without fear,” Lewis said in a separate statement. “If people are not allowed to express their dissatisfaction through peaceful protest, they will find other means to make their voices heard.”

“This is not China or Russia or Syria. This is America, and in this country we have a right to protest in a peaceful, orderly non-violent fashion...

I wonder which country would not like to have "a right to protest in a peaceful, orderly non-violent fashion"?

This is like asking for fighting a war in a "peaceful, orderly non-violent fashion."

I wish the US also had preached the Arab Spring protesters in Libya to protest "in a peaceful, orderly non-violent fashion."

Bloody hypocrites.

Now and then this will happen in any country, but the fact is clear

US government did not try to hide this event~ nor did the US prevent civil society to voice their concern.

Even US government sponsored Voice of America did not take this event lightly to criticized the government and condemned the police action
Ferguson Riots Underscore Police Militarization in US

If they're hypocrites, no US government officials would admit the wrong doing and call for investigation.
(Which is of course... ergg..hmmm... typical of officials in a "certain" country in East Asia to hide and admit no wrong doing until it unravels to cause irreversible damage)

The whole thing is quite funny to say the least. Before the police released the video of the boy shop lifting and assaulting the shop keeper. Every news channel was making the kid out to be this perfect poster child, and he was an innocent black kid, killed by a white cop. But now they are telling people to ignore the whole shop lifting thing, and saying he made a small mistake. I love the hypocrisy from the civil rights groups.

As for police using force against protesters these turns started to burn down cars and shoplift near by stores to which the police responded by firing tear gas.

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown: Social media calls out MSM for portrayal of Mike Brown

If you were killed, what photo would the media use in their stories? That’s the question that the #iftheygunnedmedown hashtag asks on social media as minorities point out media bias in the deaths of African-Americans.

The question comes after the shooting death of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri on Saturday. The unarmed 18-year-old was about to begin college when he was killed by a police officer. But the mainstream media shows a picture of Brown flashing a peace sign, which Yesha Callahan at The Root says has been called a “gang sign” by conservative outlets. She calls this the “Trayvon Martin effect.”

If you died, which picture would the media use? #IfTheyGunnedMeDown #MikeBrown http://bit.ly/1sNlKhe

“The vicious slaying of Mike Brown by Ferguson, Mo., police has once again shown that the narrative the media paints surrounding black people in America more often than not includes depicting us as violent thugs with gang and drug affiliations,” Callahan wrote.

So young African-Americans took to Twitter and Tumblr and other social media, posting contrasting pictures of themselves ‒ a wholesome image of themselves in a military uniform, for instance, juxtaposed with a more tawdry one, such as holding up their middle fingers and snarling ‒ and using the trending hashtag. The meme asks which photo the mainstream media would use if the picture’s subject were gunned down by police (like Brown) or by a non-African-American (like Martin).

Would the media use the picture of them at their best? Or the one of them that might garner less sympathy? Would their picture help portray them as victim of police brutality or as a thug the cops were right to be wary of?

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown what pic will the media use ?

“#IfTheyGunnedMeDown isn’t just demanding that people... see past clothing. It’s questioning if it’s possible for people, especially young black men, to live their lives online without worry that an innocent photo of them gettin’ gully at a party will somehow become re-appropriated as evidence of black thuggery,” the Washington Post’s Morning Mix wrote.

“The hashtag asks if black teens have the same right as others to make mistakes — to do dumb things and post about it on Facebook or clown around with their friends — without becoming branded in perpetuity.”

We should respect USA's right to manage their internal affairs to the extent that they respect our reciprocal right. So far, that means not at all. So maybe we should say something about the Ferguson massacre :).

We reserve the right to criticize the US regime when they start howling at China upon some instance. :)

Right now, as you say, we just respect them to do whatever they want to do with their own citizenry.

Just save the pictures of heavily-armed "riot police" and shove them into their brain when they start to lecture China upon some gathering with a few police officer in plain uniforms watching over.
