State Department asks Bangladesh to buy arms from US

So? It makes it even more fun to watch the BD posters do this drama anyway lol. "Things have changed.....nggggghhhhhhhhhh".

Only thing that has "changed" is they gave the US scumbag politicians a few more talking points (reading off a script) for virtue signalling about free state in Arakan blah (free talk for zero action in the end, the politicians best scenario).....but again you try talk to them outside of the chambers about Bangladesh....and they go "huh, whats that?"

But let them dream. Maybe they feel low-base effect will kick in somehow here too given they import just a little over a billion from US a year yet talking here as though they import something like 10 billion from them (a level one can argue to try start get noticed, given they have zilch in strategic significance).

Pakistan with all its problems imports twice that from US (three times if you include services trade)....where's the vaunted cash surplus BD superpower I wonder?

You know what was REALLY fun to watch?

Bat sh$t crazy Indian media since Feb 27th.

Congrats to your people.

We can't all be as imaginative.

No I disagree.

Indian media put on quite the show.

Regardless, whats this obsession you have with Bangladesh?

Should we first talk about that first?

Its fun. You guys take everything super serious and bunch up together in a huddle of tears and whinging.

Look at some of these large threads posted while I was gone....lol. So juicy.

Its like they created a "sanctuary" here just for you lot to fester in, so they can swoop in and take the mickey outta you. And you lot willingly oblige each time without fail :cheesy:. Quite the spectacle....and then the "try to be serious" types like you stick out like sore thumbs.

I find you pretty funny in your quips and retorts tho, good job. Somewhat wasted here, but hey....keep at it.

It's cute that you think you have any legitimacy in your condesenscion.

But keep posting bro.

You amuse me.

Butt-hurt has stopped calling his Pakistani troll "friends" after the events of 27th February. Lol

It’s called leaving the kitchen while it’s hot.

Anyways, let’s try to get back to posts relevant to this thread.

Bingo!

I had posted about something along those lines awhile ago when I met with a family friend who is close with some US lawmakers.

I had suggested to him why doesnt BD approach the US for arms.

He had told me that it was already being discussed.

The man speaketh the truth!
Ur wish is coming true bro. With a rising economy and this greenlight by US...BD should shore up its capabilities to keep foes at bay.

I think they are busy with the big mouths from India at the present.

Your countrymen seem to have been living in an alternate reality recently.

Looking at this guys’s Big mouth do you even need to remind him. If someone lives on government hangout they have plenty of time for his.

The US State Department wants Bangladesh to buy defence products from Washington.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said the State Department officials made the request when he recently visited Washington.

He had a meeting with his counterpart Mike Pompeo and also met other officials.

“At the assistant secretary level they asked 'why don’t’ you buy defence products from us? You buy them from other countries',” he said on being asked about his visit after his meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering.

Momen replied: “Of course we’ll buy if you are affordable."

He said particularly in spare parts the American defence contractors jack up the price. “If you don’t do that and offer a special price then definitely we will buy them,” he told the State Department official.

“We don’t have any problem (buying from the US). Their price is just too high,” he said. Bangladesh traditionally buys defence products from China and Russia, the rivals of the Americans.

During his visit, Momen said he discussed almost all the issues including trade and investment.

He said US entrepreneurs informed him that they were keen to invest in Bangladesh’s energy sector which has huge potential.

“Americans are very keen to invest in the energy (sector) and they told me that General Electric was coming here with a huge investment offer,” he said.

The minister said he told the US officials that Bangladesh always encourages the diversity of investment and trade.

When asked, he said the US is apprehensive of the Chinese one-belt, one-road initiative.

“I told them you (US) can come and develop infrastructure through your Indo-Pacific strategy. You’ll be winner. We’ll be winner. We maintain balanced relations with all.

He also told his counterpart Pompeo that Bangladesh’s economy was about to take off and "it’s time for you to join us”.

“If you don’t join us now, you’ll lose the market. If your guys want to make money, they should come to Bangladesh right now. Or else, they’ll miss the bus,” he said, on his maiden US visit after taking office as foreign minister.

Kudos for telling the US straight up that they jack up their spare parts price- takes a lot of balls to say that

Although, interestingly BD tried to acquire F-16s in the late 90's only to be laughed at by the US
Then our economy was like 1/5th of current economic size. United States thought, such a desperately poor country should not waste precious resources on expensive fighter jet. Plus China was not a capable geo-political rival of US in 2 decades ago. After China's emergence, United States see countries in Asia-Pacific region a lot differently than they seen them in 1990s. As American pivot is shifting in Asia-Pacific region, Bangladesh will see growing interests from United States along with other countries in this region. So, such type of offer is quite expected now unlike earlier.

Fighter jets are big ticket items.

I am almost sure the US is referring to much smaller items.

At least at this point in time.

And to start with.
I do not think so, Bangladesh already use American transport plane and helicopter. There is no need for them to request Bangladesh to procure smaller items. This request is directly related to Bangladesh's quest to procure fighter jets. Fighter jets is the only way they can leverage on Bangladesh through defence item selling. And that's what is on their mind.

Yea I agree.

Money talks.

If and when BD has disposable cash to fund arms, the US will be eager to sell.

Or at least much more so than in the past.
