'Starving Bangladesh of beef' would cost India Rs 31,000 crore

NEW DELHI: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday asked BSF jawans to put a stop to cattle smuggling across the Indo-Bangla border and stifle it so severely that people in Bangladesh stop eating beef. However, if BSF were to implement Singh's instructions strictly, India would be saddled with an additional expenditure in excess of Rs 31,000 crore annually.

This would be the cost of sustaining around 1.25 crore cattle in various gaushalas (cowsheds) annually till they die naturally. The figure is four times higher than the allocation made by the government for nutrition of children under Integrated Child Development Scheme.

Every year, on an average, close to 25 lakh cattle are smuggled from India to Bangladesh illegally across the border. It is alleged that much of this happens with the connivance of those guarding the border--a charge denied by BSF. However, sources say, the sheer economics of the trade make it near impossible to stop cattle smuggling across Indo-Bangla border.

Processed cattle meat is a multi-million dollar industry in Bangladesh with India as the prime source of cattle. What, perhaps, the minister was not briefed about by his officials is that a large part of this is not eaten in Bangladesh but exported to Gulf countries. Most Bangladeshis, according to reportage in that country's media, still can't afford to eat beef regularly and do so only during festivities and other celebrations.

"There is economic pressure on both sides of the border. While there is massive demand in Bangladesh, there is matching supply from India as dairies and independent cattle-rearers can't afford to feed their animals after they have gone dry. Then we have friendly relations with Bangladesh and we are not supposed to fire lethal weapons at smugglers unless attacked. In fact, our men carry non-lethal weapons on Bangladesh border. All of this facilitates the illegal trade. Unless a practical solution is found to feed these dry cows, this is unlikely to stop," said a BSF officer.

That is where the figure of Rs 31,000 crore comes in. Life expectancy of cows in India varies between 15 and 20 years. Dairy industry sources say they generally stop producing milk about five years before their death. With 25 lakh cattle approaching borders every year, if government puts a complete stop to cattle smuggling it would be saddled with 1.25 crore dry cattle to feed annually. Given that cumulative cost (maintenance of cowshed, payment of salaries to cowherds and feed) of sustaining a dry cow for a year would translate to roughly Rs 25,000, government would have to shell out Rs 31,250 crore annually, say industry sources.

The cost of acquiring land for cowsheds and initial investment in building the infrastructure has to be additionally incurred.

Addressing BSF jawans at a border outpost in West Bengal on Wednesday, Singh (as quoted by agencies) said, "I am told prices of beef in Bangladesh have gone up by 30% recently due to heightened vigil by BSF against cattle smuggling. You further intensify your vigil so that the cattle smuggling stops completely and prices of beef in Bangladesh escalates 70%-80% more so that people of Bangladesh give up eating beef."

. .
both side would suffer price money business etc..
it will be hard for the business in india to control so many cows
the only reason i support because we need to control our tongue from beef and learn to be self sufficient

Smuggling cattle from India to Pakistan was also very active about a decade ago, especially across punjab. i don't know if the situation has improved now.

BSF seizes ganja, heroin near Bangladesh border

Kolkata: The BSF, in three operations across the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, has seized 64 kg of ganja and over 500 grams of heroin besides arresting a man for weapons smuggling, an officer said on Thursday.

Troopers of the 26th battalion of the Border Security Force seized 64 kg of ganja near Behra border outpost in North 24 Parganas district during a special operation on Wednesday night.

"A BSF patrol party ambushed three smugglers carrying two gunny bags. While they managed to escape under the cover of darkness, we seized 64 kg of ganja kept in those bags," a BSF officer said.

In a similar operation near Renu border outpost in Murshidabad district, 585 grams of heroin was seized while it was being smuggled into the state.

Acting on specific inputs, a BSF special team intercepted a 34-year-old man suspected to be a weapons carrier near Kecharipara border outpost in Murshidabad. Two locally-made hand guns and a mobile phone were seized from him.

As if stopping beef supply from india will stop Bangladeshis from eating beef. All it will mean will be an short term price rise and expansion of the local dairy industry until they fill the supply shortfall, with companies like Bengal Meat making the money that goes to the indian suppliers. In the end its all about supply and demand.....

If i have read it correctly, the smuggled Cow inside Bangladesh just cost INR1500 only??
Pakistan and India should sign a proper trade deal on this. I can safely say that even at INR 10000 per Cow/Buffalo/Bull, our traders will be happily buying from you.
But we won't be selling it to you...!!!!

For your information, some beef is imported by Pakistan at Wagah border. Daily consignments are received here. Problem is that you guys slaughter them at your side and hides are retained also. By sending live cattle, you will not commit the sin of slaughtering a cow and we will get the cattle to meet our needs.
Win win for both sides.

See by exporting beef.. we are not going to receive a huge amount of money or anything that will turn our economy.... and there is something which the government cannot do as the majority hindus and sikhs despise cow slaughter.. and for you info.... according to basic tenants of hinduism, by selling our mother to you, its us who are commiting the sin, not you by slaughtering and eating her.... but there are many motherf*****ers among us who gives a ratssh*** about these values...we need to slaughter these guys asap to save our cows

Okay, as it may suits your country. One question, what you do when a cow die naturally? How is your Country's leather industry meeting it needs?

When a cow dies naturally, It might be burnt or buried ( generally cows die naturally in go-shalas cowsheds...). The leather industry of india is the most cruel one with the cows skinned alive sometimes.... we also import the skin from bangladesh illegally after they have buchered the cows illegally that have reached them.... our own cow rearers should be skinned alive
