SriLankan Airlines top foreign carrier to India with 106 flights a week
Oct 31, 2016 07:10 AM GMT+0530 | 1 Comment(s)

ECONOMYNEXT - State-run SriLankan Airlines had added 11 new destinations including Gan in the Maldives, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Indonesia and more cities in India, flying 106 times a week to the country and becoming its top foreign carrier.

The airline said it is flying to Lahore, Pakistan; Jakarta, Indonesia; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Muscat, Oman; Kolkata, Madurai, Varanasi & Bodh Gaya, India; Bahrain; Seychelles; and Gan, Maldives in a route expansion.

The addition of Kolkata, Madurai, Bodh Gaya and Varanasi will make SriLankan Airlines the foreign airline with the largest network in India, , one of the world’s largest travel markets, covering 11 cities with 106 flights per week, increasing from its present 88 flights to 7 cities.

Some of the destinations including Bangladesh and Indonesia come with the ceasing of operations of loss-making budget carrier Mihin Lanka.

It also comes as the airline trims flights to Europe.

"We have realigned our strategic focus to Asia, from the Middle East to the Far East, as we see excellent opportunities in this high-growth region," SriLankan Chairman Ajith Dias said in a statement.

"We are confident that the linking of so many Asian cities will produce a travel network, which will be extremely convenient for our passengers and profitable for the airline."

Three weekly flights to Lahore started September 27; and Jakarka (4 flights), Dhaka (daily), Madurai (daily), Muscat (5 flights) and Kolkata (3 flights) started on October 30.

Bahrain (5 flights), Seychelles (4 flights), Varanasi (2 flights) and Bodh Gaya starts on October 31.

Gan Island (4 flights) in the Maldives will join SriLankan’s network on December 01, bringing to network to 102 destinations in 47 countries. (Colombo/Oct31/2016)

SriLankan's a good airline but it needs to upgrade its equipment asap.

Not surprising given that India is the only neighbor that SL has, hence can run a high number of flights into India

One needs to understand ALK (Sri Lankan) operates mostly narrowbodies to India. Then also, Emirates has 180 flights a week, EY has 102 flights all on widebodies (except few EY).

Go to international data in this :

Lufthansa, Emirates, Etihad, Oman Air, Singapore all carry more passengers than Sri Lankan

lets Face it SriLankan Airlines are Cheaper then Indian ones they Take off and Land on Time Plus the Customer Service is Best ... Our air Hostess and ground staff think they are Kings and Queens, customer are treated like Shiit even in private ones, They dont provide accommodation if the flights are delayed ...

Last time I literally had a verbal fight with jet airways and they called the cops at Dubai International airport ... The cops mediated and asked the airlines to get me the next flight in some other airlines...

What Lankans Lack is better Planes and specious seating arrangement...

.
Plus, SriLankan Airlines has absorbed all of Mihin Lanka's routes.

As far as I know, SriLankan has cancelled delivery of their A350XWB aircraft. To me, this is an unfortunate turn of events :(

They cost too much and most of European routes are being cancelled in favour of regional destinations where SriLankan can compete better.
They are getting A321neo instead

Our A330s were leased to PIA for their "Premier flights"

I think the new flights are also including Mihin Lanka as all of its routes were taken over by SriLankan
