Sri Lankan President arrives in Pakistan on three day visit

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived here Friday on a three-day state visit to Pakistan to further strengthen political, economic and defence ties between the two countries.

He was received at Chaklala Air Base by Chairman Senate Farooq H Naek, Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Eng Shaukat Ullah, and other officials.

The Sri Lankan president is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of President Asif Ali Zardari.

A formal welcome ceremony for the guest would be held at the President House this afternoon when he arrives there to meet President Zardari.

During his visit, President Rajapaksha, besides meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

The talks between the two countries would cover political, defense, cultural, tourism, media, economic, business and trade relations. A number of bilateral agreements are also expected to be signed between the two sides.

US$ 200 million from the Government of Pakistan

The Government of Pakistan has agreed to extend an Export Credit Facility of US$ 200 million through the State Bank of Pakistan. This was agreed during the visit of Pakistani President to Sri Lanka in November 2010.

An amount of US$ 150 million of this credit, is to be utilized for the construction of Housing Units and the balance US$ 50 million for the importation of livestock, plant and machinery from Pakistan.

The Loan agreement will be signed with the Government of Pakistan, during current State visit of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Pakistan.

Can anyone clarify this news. Because can Pakistan afford to give Sri Lanka a loan of 200 million USD where there is a huge economic crisis and Pakistan fell short by 73% aid to flood victims in Sindh.

Pakistan's relations with Sri Lanka go back to decades of cooperation. We have always been a friend of Sri Lanka and will do what ever we can to help establish even more broader relations to solidify this friendship.

I'm not questioning the pakistans intent of giving the aid, but is pakistan in a position to aid some other country when you yourselves have so much to improve, Sri Lanka is financially stronger/stable than pakistan. 200 millions ah not much amount may be that's why they donated it for the sake of friendly relations
