Guruvayoor (Ker): Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe on Saturday offered worship at the famous Lord Krishna Temple here amid heavy security.


The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by his wife Maitree Wickramsinghe, arrived at the shrine at around 11.15 am.

Wickramasinghe offered 'Thulabharam' (an offering where a devotee is weighed against offerings of banana, sugar, flowers etc) with sandalwood.

About 77 kg of sandalwood, at an estimated cost of Rs 8.45 lakh, was offered by the dignitary as an offering to the temple.

Guruvayur Melsanthi (chief priest) Morkkannur SriHari Namoodiri handed over 'prasadams' to the dignitary.

Wickramasinghe also offered 'Neyvillaku', 'Panakizhi' and plantains to the deity.

Lankan Culture Minister Swaminathan accompanied the dignitaries.

Later speaking to reporters, Wickramasinghe said cultural ties between the island nation and India would be further strengthened. He was not pro India or pro China, but was a Prime Minister who wanted to ensure the interests of Sri Lanka, he said.

A team of experts from Sri Lanka would visit the elephant sanctuary of the Guruvayur devaswom at Punnathoor, he said.

The Prime Minister also offered worship at the Mamiyoor Mahadeva temple here.

There was heavy security at the temple premises in connection with Wickramasinghe's visit.

Temple has strict rules regarding the dress and ergo he's wearing a pattu mundu.

1. Entry is restricted to those who profess the Hindu religion.
2. Do not enter the temple wearing shirt, banyan, pyjama, lungi, chequered clothes, chapels etc.
3. The dress code for men is Dhoti with or without Angavastra. The dress codes for women are Salavar sets, Sarees, Dhoties or Pavadas with blouse or other coverings as appropriate to their age. Modern dresses are not allowed. Young girls below 12 years may wear gowns. No other types of dress should not be worn or taken inside the temple.
4. Bathe and wear clean clothes before entering the Temple.
5. Do not take video camera, mobile phone, radio, tape recorder etc. inside the temple wall(Nalambalam). There are facilities (paid counter) to keep them outside the temple.
6. Enter the temple with an absolute sense of devotion.
7. Do not smoke or spit inside the Temple.
8. Do not use or carry pan masala and such other things inside the Temple
9. Do not throw away the prasadam and theertham received from the Temple. Handle them with respect.
10. Do not enter the Temple or Temple premises after consuming liquor and non-vegetarian food.
11. Take special care of your valuables.

Till a few years back women were not allowed to wear Salwar Kameez inside the temple, but since a lot of tourists visit this temple so the rules were relaxed as it caused a lot of inconvenience for the women.

Though entry if limited to hindus, but often ppl from other religions visit the shetram and make offerings at the mandap.

Hindu Tourists would be the correct term.

Rajapaksa was a Buddhist. Buddhism is an offshoot of Hinduism so he's allowed.
I dont know about the PM.

You've no knowledge of the history of this temple. The statue of the deity in this temple is more than a thousand years old.
