Sri Lankan Govt. to amend Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is reported to have informed the diplomatic community in Sri Lanka yesterday that the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act would be amended to increase the age of marriage to 18 for Muslim women in a move aimed at unifying the personal laws as far as possible.

He briefed the heads of diplomatic missions in Colombo on the security situation in the country after the serial bombings on April 21 and the steps taken for de-radicalization as a step towards sustainable peace in the country.

The PM said steps would be taken to reform the education sector and the legal system of the country.

As an initial step for implementing a common law cutting across different ethnic groups, he said the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act would be amended to declare 18 as the marriageable age for Muslim women in line with other the laws applicable for other communities.

He said Madrasas or the Muslim religious schools would be brought under the purview of the Education Ministry.

According to sources close to the Prime Minister, there were requests from Muslim Woman organizations to increase the age of marriage to 18.

The military officers who were present at the meeting briefed the diplomatic community about the security situation.

They told the diplomats the entire terror network of the bomb attackers had been dismantled since all the key suspects had either been killed or arrested and that there were no intelligence report about any other terrorist attack.

The government requested the respective countries to modify their travel advisories in accordance with the improvement of the security situation in the country. There was positive response from the British High Commission to this request. (Kelum Bandara)

No this is your own bias way of thinking. I never even mentioned anything about age gaps. It's you who are jumping the gun with assumptions.

I've never heard of a country having different minimum ages of marriage for their men and women by law. I imagine by raising it to 18 for women, they've also raised it to 18 for men but it suits their interests to mention women only because then they can defend themselves and make it look like they are saving women.

Likewise in India, the hindu extremists team up with secularists and Muslim women's organisations in order to force Muslims to change their divorce laws under the state and they defend their actions by stating they are doing it to help women.

It's common tactic used everywhere.

Girls attempting suicide to escape child marriages and another incident of a child being burned alive by her husband by pouring oil went viral but the current government relies too much on the votes of the Muslims including those of the wrong end.

Somewhere in Sri Lanka, I'm pretty sure there are buddhists women, well over the age of 18, who have been murdered by their husbands or have tried to commit suicide. Are you going to blame muslims for those incidents too?

There are many places in the world where people can get married before the age of 18, it's how humanity have lived for most of history.

2. Or you are so dumb that you think people over the age of 18 don't commit suicide due to marriage and that there isn't domestic abuse in marriage over the age of 18 and that it can't happen in non-Muslim marriages.
