Sri Lankan foreign minister seeking Bangladeshi support on Commonwealth

Please stick to the topic.

This is about Bangladeshi-Sri Lanka relations, and not just about the commonwealth or how wonderful Canada is.

Sri Lanka is the 4th nation of South Asia so we obviously want good ties with it. Canada can be discussed in another thread.

Thanks.

While this article may be primarily bangladesh-srilanka relation oriented, Canada was the original country that launched the accusations at sri lankan government, so I believe Canada is very much involved in this diplomatic strife though your correct, I did stumble from my main point.

living in queen's country and talking trash about commonwealth, meanwhile long lines in pakistan and inde where PHDs are trying to come to our country, classic canadian immigration policy.

What? You basically replied to what you thought you saw in my post, not what I've actually written.

Talking trash about commonwealth? I didn't mean to. I just called it what it is - a Club of Colonized Nations. On what grounds do you disagree?

What has Commonwealth got to do with living in Canada? It's not like there's an immigration quota or something for citizens of Commonwealth member countries. Besides, I'm not suggesting Canada leave the Commonwealth. It doesn't concern me at all. Likewise, BD's membership in Commonwealth shouldn't concern you. So what was your point again? =)

1. SL has always been our close ally. Sri Lankan's often refer to their origin to be from Bengal and Prince Vijaya. In the past BD and SL did not require pre-arrival visa. During this BAL regime this is no more. We also suffered an embarrassment in the Ramu incident which was organized by Burmese Intel utilizing local BAL low level leaders.

2. What is happening in SL is part of India's on-going program to pressurize / de-estabilze this nation. BD foreign affairs under BAL govt are very much controlled from New Delhi. How BD tackles this situation will depend on the guidance received from New Delhi. SL's closeness to China and Pakistan are viewed with much concern by India. Therefore, India's advise to BD in this matter would have to be in line with India's position.

3. However, if BD were to take an independent decision it would go along with the SL govt's position. Any dissenting views would have to be conveyed covertly as one ally to another ally.

To act relatively independent in Foreign Affairs Awami League should come out of its dependency on India for party/election finance. They sometimes prioritized Indian business interests over those of BD. For example import of salt from India resulting in our own salt cultivators' failure to sell their produce or awarding contracts for textbook printing to Indian publishers aggrieved the local salt cultivators and capable publishers. These things indeed manifest the popular perception of BAL's India-leaning policies which is consequent to alleged finance from Indian businessmen during election.

BD's dalal gov stance depends on the prescription from New Delhi. SL FM is wasting his time & resources by seeking support from the wrong place. :coffee:

The point is not about sharing the past infact if Bd does not like the colonial past and values may be they should stop adhering to common law and bring another system forexample quebec follows the napoleonic code, i am sure bangladesh has an indeginous code they would want to adhere to.

Edit: Also let me make it clear, the reason our government did it is because of extensive protests in the past year from tamil minority which make up a substantial amount of 1% in canada and they have the money to back them up so government has to listen to their interest and based on the data, there were some violation that were conducted and sri lankan government is not entirely innocent. However BD as a future south asian power with an enormous population with a similar past should empathize with Canada's view point in this case though the final decision is still in BD governments hand. Hopefully they do not play petty politics and remain objective.

For being a close ally with US Canada has always blindly supported all the aggressive activities it did around the world though we all know and believe Canada is a peaceful nation. We understand why you did it...similarly Sri Lanka is our ally. We can't go against their govt. Being seated on throne sometime the rulers have to be ruthless. Sri Lanka has definite reasons for handling things brutally...that's another story.

Well, the past is past.

I'm pretty sure Sri Lanka would be the first country in South Asia to be of developed status.

SL could have goNE faster in economy had it decided to accept of intentional allegations of killing unarmed Tamil civilians in the thick of bombing and firing specially during the end of the war. It could have brought foreign investment and market for its exports. But, EU and now Commonwealth are demanding SL to release its clasified documents on the civilian casualities. SL govt is unwilling to do so and want the world to forget somehow its past brutal policy to subdue the Tamils.

SL thinks if it declassifies its military records it will cause the country to lose face in front of the world community. Moreover, once civilian killings are accepted by the SL govt, it will open not only old wounds, but also open ways whereby the Tamil victims' kins go to court to demand compensation from the govt under international laws. So, the govt of SL is now in a dilemma how to get rid of the civilian killing issue after which it can attract foreign investments snd develop the country.

The denials have caused Canada and other western countries to put pressure on the sl Govt, and this has also resulted in very low investment from the western capitalists.
