Sri Lanka willing to assist India combat LTTE threat
Sri Lanka will assist India combat any LTTE threat, if a request was received, the government said yesterday.
Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, when asked at yesterdays Cabinet press briefing in Colombo, about intelligence reports that the LTTE was planning to assassinate the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh among others, said that Sri Lanka was prepared to help India fight terror attacks, provided there was a request to that effect.
The Indian Intelligence Bureau (IIB) on Wednesday said that some LTTE cadres who had managed to escape to Tamil Nadu, were trying to regroup and launch spectacular strikes on high profile targets like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
The LTTE cadres, it said believe that the Indian governments silence was the cause of their defeat, at the hands of the Sri Lankan security forces.
The IIB said that it was taking the LTTE threat seriously, as it had in 1991, killed former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi while he was campaigning in the South Indian state of Madras.
