Sri Lanka to offer India port development to balance out China

NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka may find it difficult to wriggle out of China's clutches because of the massive debt it owes to Beijing but to balance things out, it is now set to allow India to jointly develop the Trincomalee port in northeastern part of the country.

Diplomatic sources said Sri Lanka has readied an MoU for joint development of the project and that it's likely to be signed during PM Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Colombo. Official sources also confirmed that Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghewould visit India this month to review bilateral ties.

India has in the past not been particularly enthused about developing the Trincomalee port as the project did not appear economically feasible. As former Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa claims, the island nation under him had first approached India for developing the Hambantota port in south and allowed China to come in only after India refused the offer.

India had the same fear about Hambantota as it felt developing the port there was not going to be financially viable. While India was vindicated in the sense that the port failed to generate enough traffic, it now has to contend with a heavy Chinese presence there. Sri Lanka has now allowed China to build a special economic zone in Hambantota and also to further expand the Mattala airport.

The commercial aspect aside, Sri Lanka's decision to jointly develop the Trincomalee port with India is being seen as a good sign by the government and independent strategic affairs experts.

According to strategic thinker Brahma Chellaney, ensnared in a Chinese debt trap, Sri Lanka is increasingly cognizant of and concerned about the growing implications that this situation holds for its strategic autonomy.

"For example, from a Chinese-financed Sri Lankan project, Hambantota is becoming a Chinese-owned and Chinese-run enclave in the Indian Ocean," says Chellaney.

"Jointly developing the Trincomalee port with India cannot counterbalance the Chinese leverage over Sri Lanka but it can help Colombo build countervailing influence. A Trincomalee port joint project with India also makes sense in terms of Sri Lanka's domestic ethnic considerations," he adds.

i read some article and i don't know weather it's right or not,

our next is going to sell land to them to repay the amount after 2-3 Yeaars

I literally like the diplomacy of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ... they are getting all possible benefits from both China and India

Ghanta benefit.They are getting debt trap with loans impossible to pay.This will be followed by seizure of assets in the future.In Pakistan,this "seizure of assets" will be on an industrial scale.Will be interesting to watch!

china already own half of Pakistan share market and Keep Increasing loan to them which will set them in the trap

Actually it's a game both sides are playing. Unlike Sri Lanka, which genuinely realized their mistake in soliciting Chinese investment and tried to re-negotiate/terminate the projects, Pakistan will have no such compunctions. They will gladly hand over these infrastructure projects to the Chinese. They are undertaking the entire CPEC project fully aware that there is no way they can repay principle+interest in these loans.

Triconomolee project is not financially viable. If it warrants enough we can build a grand fishing harbour with 2-3 berths for other shipments. There is nothing much there to warrant investments on a large scale. Added to that, you have Thoothukudi port, (one of 12 major ports in India) nearby, plus vizhingam and kolachel port construction have started.

Sri Lanka will always have Indian influence no matter what. Maybe we can invest something like 500m there to secure the north.

like your mind set only India is doing and china is taking advantage of that, where they can pour money and get surrounded us,

if India has well foreign policy they this guys not even have change to surround us,

Vizhingam port is getting expanded i think 3Rd phase is going on but center is unwilling to use it. There's no clachan port it's now Enayam port and they've not even laid a stone... it might never come
