Sri Lanka PM office says PM has advised Justice Minister to draft laws to stop Burka (face cover) Muslim women dress after discussing it with main Islamic cleric association ACJU who have already submitted a resolution to ban it.

  Franklyn Fernando covering face should not only be targeted muslim community. All the acts of covering face in public should be banned. There had been so many robberies and killings in Sri Lanka wearing full faced helmets.

Muslims in Sri Lanka should co-operate with the government and all other state institutions as everything must be done to try to prevent a repeat of the evil that happened at Easter.

In general Hindus should not beef but that does not mean some part of people do not eat it...In South India, some section of people ...i think they take it..

But overall, your analogy of situation is wrong...Why Hindu will have to accomdate for face cover ban...Face cover in any form ..be in Burkha, Purda or any other form should be avoided to improve security of our society...No one is doing any favor to Hindus by doing so...Tomorrow, some terrorist who may not be Muslims can come in veil and blast themselves in Muslim neighourhood too..So do you like such situation to happen??

Breaking News

Burqa banned from tomorrow

Covering the face to avoid identification of one’s self has been banned by President Maithripala Sirisena under Emergency Regulations.

Accordingly, wearing of the traditional Muslim female garb, Burqa, and other garments which cover the face of Muslim females will be banned with effect from tomorrow (29).

This measure has been taken to ensure public safety, stated the President’s Media Division.

If you think it is a scaring then it is your mindset that think that life is all about war and getting killed for religion...
For us ..religion in such a big thing to kill ourselves...
Rather than blaming every one...pause for a moment and think that why certain section of Muslims are so susceptible to be used by some one to blow themselves up...The mindset of victimhood and radicalisation is so extreme that even a mother who is pregnat blew herself when Srilankan police started doing search to her home...

And also there is a binary here...We do not see such kind of mind of mindset from citizens from developing and progressive Muslim countries like Indonesia,Malaysia or Turkey...

What will happen is that Muslim women who cover fully will not leave their homes. You have secluded and alienated them from the public sphere.

Muslims in general will become isolated and cut off from the rest of society. They will prefer living in their own communities where they don’t face persecution and hate crimes.

This is not the solution to the problem, just a knee jerk reaction.

That's a wrong analogy because Muslims do not lynch those who eat pork or consume liquor. I'm a witness to this because I've done both of these things - right in front of my Muslim friends.

I am a Sri Lankan Muslim. I attended a strict Buddhist school. My parents didn't want me to dress differently; I wore the same uniform. I shared the same lunch packet. I took Buddhism as a subject even though I had the option to opt out. I was always present at the school sil ceremonies and actively helping out. I sang wesak bakthi gee. At home we celebrated Wesak by making and decorating our house with colourful lanterns. We always had a Chrismas tree at home and my mum would keep gifts under the tree at night, a tradition I still continue to do with my kids. As an adult I have taken part in singing Christmas carols. I have attended church sermons. My kids attend a multicultral school. They take part in Christmas nativity productions, Deepawali celebrations, Wesak celebrations. 98% of my friends are non muslims. My best friends are all Buddhists/Christians & Hindus.

All this doesn't make me any less of a Muslim. My religion is between me and my God and not for public display.

The face cover (niqab/burka) is not a mandatory requirement by Islam and if this piece of garment is a threat to national security, I, for one would not object if this were to be banned.
Some in my family may not agree but I hope they too will come to understand the greater need of the hour.
We are Sri Lankans and we should go by the Sri Lankan culture. Let's not mix culture and religion.
We are one and we need to stay united to defeat extremisms of all kind!
