The growing co-operation between the Narendra Modi government and the newly elected Maithripala Sirisena’s Lankan government is also looked upon as one of the major reasons why the island nation is not going ahead with the project.

The current Sri Lankan government has decided to temporarily suspend the construction of the controversial US $ 1.5 billion Chinese port city project citing that the real estate deal with China was signed without cabinet approval, without following procedures and is a corrupt project by the erstwhile Rajapaksha regime.

However, the growing co-operation between the Narendra Modi government and the newly elected Maithripala Sirisena’s Lankan government is also looked upon as one of the major reasons why the island nation is not going ahead with the project.

Mid-February, India and Sri Lanka on Monday discussed economic cooperation, maritime security and bilateral investments, besides other aspects of bilateral relations and international issues for a more balanced growth in trade between the two countries.

The Government of India expressed its readiness for furthering India’s investments in Sri Lanka and improved air connectivity to foster tourism ties with the island nation. Besides these, the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement between the two nations has drawn the special attention and this was the first such agreement the island nation had made.

A nuclear agreement was also on the cards for stronger cooperation in agriculture and healthcare sector along with a Memorandum of Understanding for stronger trade in the agricultural sector, defence and security cooperation, which is expected to play a strategic role in the South Asia region.

Referring to its assistance towards the construction projects in Sri Lanka like housing, under which it has already constructed more than 27,000 houses, the Indian side also expressed its commitment to Sri Lanka in furthering its assistance in the infrastructure sector.

It is believed that India also sought clarity from Sri Lanka over the China-funded Colombo port city project, which was considered by India as a security threat to New Delhi and it could be one of the reasons why the present Sri Lankan government has stopped the project for now.

Earlier in January, Colombo has asked India to help Sri Lanka set up a Finance Intelligence Unit in the island nation. This FIU being setup by India is expected to aid Sri Lanka in tracing billions allegedly stashed overseas by the erstwhile Rajapaksha regime.

. .
That is a good gesture from Sri Lanka towards India. India is Sri Lanka's only neighbor and have a history of cultural relationship of thousands of years. Hawkish Communist China should not be allowed to hijack this relationship. India and Sri Lanka are democratic nations. We can co-exist and progress even though we have few minor differences. It is a great step by the SL government just after India signed Civil-nuclear pact with them. Also please expel all those ISI agents and Islamic extremists who are working against India keeping Sri Lanka as their base. Hope our improving ties will bring social and economic prosperity to both our nations:-):-)

In other words, Sri Lanka is always going to be a 3rd world shithole of a country.

What a bunch of apes you guys are. Cheering over every piece of news that has nothing to do with you. Tomorrow if two planets collide with each other in a distant galaxy, you will say that it's Modi who did it. Before you play some big boy's geopolitical game, you should take a good look at your own country which is farrrrrrrrrrr miserable than China. China on the other hand is pragmatic and it works towards prosperity rather than wasting its resources for useless competitions. Sri Lanka needs China more than China needs Sri Lanka.

This retarded decision will only prove that Sri Lanka is not a reliable country to invest because everything depends on which political party is ruling. It seems no matter what we try we can never stop being "South Asians".

As I pointed out to you a couple of days ago, so do we.

You put more emphasis on intervening in domestic affairs of surrounding countries than working for your own well being.

Of Course we are not as rich as China. But wedidnt use our resources for giving loan to another country with an exaorbitant interest .We dont claimed it was your govt that claimed about Chinese exploitation.

And about our role. Our sensitive strategic bases are located in South India and we cant allow Chinese under our nose for snooping whether you like it or not.
