The same goes for in india

As a minority what will you do when the state including police cant, won't or even worse colludes in attacking you

The same thing happened in both india and burma

You have Bangladeshis and indian muslims jumping around pointing fingers at Pakistan
When it was Jinnah who understood the nature of the world and the importance of having a heavily armed muslim nation un South Asia for its muslims

Jinnah did not understand anything. He left 35% of the Muslims in subcontinent living under Hindu rule.
He sowed the seeds for your 1971 civil war. If Nehru/Gandhi had given him power he would have thrown the idea of Pakistan under the bus

Hindutva-India’s vibe has reached little Lanka, it seems.

Sri Lanka imposed a curfew in a central town popular with tourists after days of unrest between religious communities with a Buddhist man killed and Muslim businesses set ablaze.

Police said on Monday there had been riots and arson attacks since the weekend in Kandy district, while sources told Al Jazeera the violence was spreading throughout the South Asian island nation.

"The curfew was imposed to control the situation in the area," said police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera.

Police officers were placed on heightened alert in Kandy to ensure the "situation does not spiral into inter-communal conflagration", the government said in a statement.

Mobs set fire to Muslim-owned businesses and attacked a mosque in the east of the country.

Local officials said more than two dozen suspects had been detained by police in connection with the spate of arson attacks, while senior officers also launched an investigation into the conduct of the police.

Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon, executive director of the Centre for Human Rights Sri Lanka, condemned the "unfathomable police inefficiency" that he said led to the violence.

"Social media pages rallied Sinhalese mobs to assemble in Teldeniya town at 10am. At 11am, there was a proclivity for violent confrontations to take place as mobs gathered. The destruction of Muslim properties started taking place from around 1pm," Tennakoon told Al Jazeera.

The violence worsened after a man from the island's mainly Buddhist Sinhalese majority died from injuries sustained during a riot.

Kandy is the latest region to be plagued by religious and ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, a nation of 21 million people.

Najah Mohamed, secretary of the National Front for Good Governance party in Sri Lanka, told Al Jazeera attacks are spreading all over the country, not just in Kandy.

"We are facing the same situation that we had experienced with the previous government with tension, hate, and violence against Muslims are rampant especially where they are a dispersed community,” said Mohamed.

Religious and ethnic violence can turn deadly in Sri Lanka, where Muslims account for 10 percent of the population and Buddhists Sinhalese make up nearly 75 percent.

Some observers blame the hardline Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) group for the ongoing violence.

"The violent BBS mobs manipulated the situation to fuel attacks against Muslims in an unprecedented way and started attacking people. In the afternoon the police and curfew were here, but there are still rising underreported incidents taking place,” Mohamed said.

Religious violence is not new to the island. An anti-Muslim campaign was launched following the deadly Aluthgama riots in June 2014.

President Maithripala Siresena had vowed to investigate anti-Muslim crimes after assuming power in 2015, but no significant progress has been reported.

Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe are yet to make an official statement on the recent unrest.

Expulsion of Muslims from the Northern province by LTTE

The expulsion of the Muslims from the Northern province was an act of ethnic cleansing[1] carried out by the Tamil militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organisation in October 1990. Due to increasing tensions between the Muslims (Moors) and Tamils in the North Sri Lanka and the Muslim opposition to the creation of a Tamil homeland, the LTTE forcibly expelled the 72,000 strong Muslim population from the Northern Province.

What is the point ? LTTE was brutal. that was their undoing

Well, Tamils of Jaffna are no longer willing to accept the expelled Muslims back. They continue to thrive in the resettled areas of North Western province.

When it was Jinnah who understood the nature of the world and the importance of having a heavily armed muslim nation un South Asia for its muslims

Heavily armed muslim nation will result in all muslims from all the muslim minority states to be expelled into that heavily armed country and a strict ban on Islam across several countries to prevent spies and agents of the heavily armed country from setting up base.

Good luck taking in all the muslims.

Would you suggest a similar tactic for sects who feel threatened in a Muslim dominated country too? This is a law and order issue which flared up after a Buddhist was killed by a group of Muslim. Things will die down after couple of days.

Law and order issue exists because the laws are arbitrary. If a proper law that is strictly enforced and any problem arising because of wrong laws resulting in the execution of the head of the government and police then alone there can be accountability. The laws itself are arbitrarily written.

Latest update i'm getting is thankfully the violence have been contained, And thankfully only one life have been lost except for the death of the lorry driver who was assaulted that led to this terrible backlash.. But it will take decades to heal the wounds of the people who were affected especially innocent Muslim communities that were targeted by extremist forces presumably outsiders that have taken advantage of the situation to spread the violence

The govt will have to prosecute these bastards, There cannot be any impunity even if it's clergy, The failure to effectively punish the wrongdoers of the past violence led to this situation

Glad to see news and images of how communities helping each other aftermath, images of Buddhist monks and young men protecting Mosques and property from the mobs and looters are coming in, It's heartening to see that the majority of Lankans of all sides are still good people

Major societal changes need to be made if Sri Lanka is to go forward as a nation.. People need to made to realize they're Sri Lankan first not Muslims, Sinhala or Tamil

Linguistic and religious based schools need to be abolished

Religious and ethnic based civil laws need to be abolished.. There has to be one common law that supersedes every other one

Foreign religious extremist forces need to be curtailed, For this to happen heads of Mosques need to take affirmative action, They have been practicing Islam in the island for thousands of years without any issues, Salafist ideology creeping in is one of the main causes for conflict not only with other communities but within Muslims as well

Divisive issues such as Halal, recent phenomenon of Arabic dress codes, Child marriage, Womens rights, Impunity given to Buddhist monks, Ethnic bias in the police towards Sinhalese community, Discriminatory practices against other religious minorities and most importantly crack down on Sinhala extremist groups need to be addressed without delay

@Godman
The wounds exists for 1000 years and is not a new one. What you are suggesting is to indirectly ban islam and make muslims assimilate with Sinhalese over time. That itself will lead to a riot. If it was so simple that law can be made on anything, things would not be this difficult. Laws are made by people and the legitimacy of these people can be questioned. The concept that once elected the elected people can do anything till their term ends is simply absurd.

Just saying.

LTTE was created, armed, and funded by your dear PM Indira.

Once again, just saying.

Indira Gandhi is dead for the past 33 years

Well of course. They have a all Tamil provincial council for the Northern province and most of all the opposition leader is from the biggest Tamil political party which have won majority votes consecutively in Jaffna area. What more power do they need?

sad consequence of playing identity politics

there are way too many mosques everywhere. you travel to kandy, there's a mosque every hundred metres which makes you think that sri lanka is a muslim country. these hajis are way too agressive thinking that we owe them shit. recently there were retards advocating under age marriages and sharia law in constitution. if they want that they should move to pakistan but if they try their shit in sri lanka they are up for a real surprise. we are not indians btw.
so you hate Muslims and mosques?

did Buddha taught you this?
they advocated sharia law not enforced it. its their Democratic right.

pakistan is a country made for muslims in south asia with muslim laws and customs in mind, isn't it? so if someone wants to live under such conditions, he should consider moving to a country where his ideals and attitudes match more with the prevailing culture of the said country.
and even in that extraordinary ideological Muslim state ordinary public don't support burning minority homes for no reason. Had you been in Pakistan posting such hatred against minority, then within few hours you would have become a missing person. We consider our minority as vital part of our country.

It is not like Kashmir you know. Army is restricted to the camps. Tamil politicians run the daily shows. There is no restriction for them to welcome the displaced Muslim population.
