I think if india does this would be good, can rehabilitate a lot of rapists. It will teach them that raping people is not the way, and reinforce that socially positive behavior has its rewards. @rott @faithfulguy @Chinese-Dragon @eldarlmari

@Peshwa
Look like a resort.

A new prison in sri lanka aims to provide rewards and privileges to prisoners for positive behavior, such as access to a 25-meter pool facility. Educational programs will be implemented aimed at reducing the risk of persons who have committed crimes of a violent and/or se xual nature, positive progress in these programs will be rewarded.

Sri lanka expects to roll out similar such facilities island wide depending on statistics of the number successfully rehabilitated.

In India, certain prisons like in Chennai and Thrissur (and probably in many moreplaces) there Are self help groups created by prisoners under the aegis of the jail warden , to produce things of value in certain industry verticals , for example food and beverages. A famous example is the 'freedom' brands in Chennai . It is a clothing and food line exclusively from the prisoners .the revenue generated is used for prisoner welfare and support once they are released from prison .

It is not exactly the same thing as the one you have mentioned , but an appreciable undertaking nevertheless

Well, on this topic I can only point out that while US high-security prisons are notorious for violence amongst male prisoners (and sodomy) yet its not as if the rape rate in the US is any less than that in other developed countries (like the UK or Germany) where prisons are safer. So it does not appear as if violent incarceration equals less crime.

You have to dig a little deeper into the data, wrongly interpreted will result in wrong conclusions.

You must look on an individual basis, crimes rates can vary from time to time due to a whole number of reasons.

there is a theory that blames high crime rate on leaded petrol...whats your thought on that?another one is lack of abortion facility

This have been experimented and is now being used in Norway and many European countries. "Restorative Justice" is much more succesful than punishing and de-humanizing criminals as such methods only isolate them from scoiety and push them towards more crime. Giving them good facilities while training them reduces Recidivism

Did I not just tell you an alternate to this, that would guarantee that they never rape anyone again?
Its called Chemical Castration.

Its better than your ridiculous suggestion of rewards for rapists program.
Sure, so they rape someone, behave well in prison to get amenities and know that life aint bad even if you violate someone. Positive reinforcement for negative behavior! What a genius idea!
I'm glad you're not Indian, we don't need such geniuses in India. We cant handle it.

Its hard to say how these would affect rapists as they are a different type of criminal. However its always better to turn the criminal into a better human than into animal branded as a criminal for the rest of his life

I like the idea.. and lankan prison look nice.

The Norwegian idea is even better. There is no need to put low level criminals inside dog cages.

If the rape was just rape and no assault/violence involved, I don't think prison is suitable for them, as it could be mental illness. Treatment programs outside of prison maybe more effective and cheaper.

I don't follow your post.

I was only suggesting a lack of correlation between a harsh prison sentence and crime rate. That is - very little evidence exists to suggest that retributive / deterrence theories of criminal justice have been successful at meaningfully reducing crime (especially violent crime). And of course, there are many theories that attempt to explain that lack of correlation.

To that extent I do not see any likely benefit of having rapists (or other violent criminals) undergo castration, death or other similar punishment.

I would be open to idea of chemical castration of repeat violent sex offenders(voluntary) in exchange of dramatic reduction of prison sentence... its not a corrective measure, nor retributive, rather balancing safety of society while respecting individual right.
