Sri Lanka is the Third Largest Investor in Bangladesh

Sri Lanka is the third largest source of Foreign Direct Investment in Bangladesh, said Bangladeshi High Commissioner Mahbubuzzamam.

Bangladesh High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Mahbubuzzamam expressed this sentiment when he met Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne at the Prime Minister's Office. They discussed matters pertaining to mutual relations between the two countries.

During the discussion Bangladeshi High Commissioner Mahbubuzzamam said.

Sri Lanka is the third largest source of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) for Bangladesh following USA and South Korea.

He said, "Sri Lankan investors are mainly focused on producing leather products, garments and chemicals by investing in Bangladesh and many other projects which are implemented by Lankan entrepreneurs." He also mentioned that trade between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is not very large and therefore there is huge potential in the future for the two countries to expand its trading activities.

The Ambassador further stated that there are more than 2, 000 Sri Lankan nationals were in Bangladesh mainly in business.

Also nearly 400 visas are issued per month for Sri Lankans granting approval to enter Bangladesh.

Prime Minister D. M Jayaratne in reply said, "Sri Lanka has now stepped into a new path of development and the government of Sri Lanka appreciates the partnership of Bangladesh in this process". He also stated that it is a pleasure to continue a healthy relationship with Bangladesh especially because it is a member of the SAARC association.

To tell you frankly all these investment matters started in BD by the Sri Lankans when SL was at war against the LTTE. At that time, many SL citizens, desparate to earn a living, went abroad to many rich countries. But, not everone was that lucky.

So, many of them came also to our poor country where they were employed in many trading companies with good salary. It was because these SLs are well-qualified and know perfect English language skill needed to communicate with foreign buyers. Many also got job as textile designer. There are also many others who work in the low pay, but secured, jobs in textile industries.

Many of these people are responsible for the present business relationship between the two countries. You will understand that a company would move to another shore if there are business opportunities there. But, they would much prefer a shore where they would find their own people. So, the people who came during the LTTE battle days are the pioneers of the present day investment from Sri Lanka. This is what I think.

But, we should also know that there are many thousands of Nepali and Indian citizens working in Bangladesh? This group is, of course, well-qualified and has good command of English.

BD should train its own citizens to do an international job. But, instead, BD society tries to downgrade the role of English and other foreign languages. As a result, many job openings are filled up with Indians. Indians send quite an amount of foreign exchange from BD. Every year the State Bank of India publishes data of its source of remittance, and the name of BD is there.

Yes, we should not have an issue with SLs coming, working, doing business or building factories in BD, but Indian citizens must be restricted. I have seen a govt minister saying only a few months ago that this educated foreigners number more than 100,000. But, I do not know how many of them are Indian.

Imagine If India starts doing the same to Leagal and Illegal Bangaladesh citizens. Please dont talk if you cant think anything constructive.

Why should India have good relations with BD if BD is keen on making it worse? I am happy that people at the top are not narrow minded like you.

i wish our country closes all relations with Bangladesh..

we helped them in 1971 and now we are enemies for them..
this is what i get from the posters in community..
i don't know how we are their enemies..i mean what we did hostile towards BD????

its better for India to keep progressing like it is now and just keep an eye on hostile neighbors instead of being friends with them..

.
i m tired of BD now,i dont know y they love to drag india in b/w.although thread was going for other purpose.
