Sri Lanka Economy Shines as India and Pakistan Lag

Similarly Japan vs China tussle is a great news for us. Emotions are mutual you see.

Indian situation is different, voting for Sri Lanka or voting against Sri Lanka will bring disadvantage to them. But China has nothing to lose in here.

What will voting against Sri Lanka do to adversely affect India?

Sri Lanka has got a lot to loose by playing China against India.

This is in reference to your previous post:

There are no permanent friends, enemies or allies in geo politics. What Sri Lanka did or did not do in the 60s and 70s etc should have no bearing on Indo-Lankan relations today.

Those who ignore History are bound to repeat it. There are no friends or enemies in Geo-politics, only common interests. If Sri Lanka doesn't toe our line, or if Sri Lanka acts against our interests then we must punish Sri Lanka.

On topic:
Sri Lanka's phenomenal economic growth is appreciable, but it's economy is currently too small to be compared with the economy of India which is extremely complex.

I think majority of Indians are at best nonchalant about whatever went down during the civil war in Sri Lanka. The Tamil Indians are pretty pissed though and thats something which the Indian government can't ignore.

It will give more space for China to secure the role in the Indian ocean.

Initially trained and supported by Raw, the Indian intelligence agency, in the 1980s, the Tamil Tigers met their bloody end at the hands of Lankan military using arms manufactured and supplied by Pakistan.

Alarmed by reports of Pakistani arms supplies to Sri Lanka in 2008, India said it wanted Sri Lanka to treat Tamils with dignity and also voiced concern that Colombo’s arms purchases may upset New Delhi’s “pre-eminent position” in South Asia. “We are facing a situation where the ceasefire (in Sri Lanka) could collapse. This could lead to a flashpoint,” National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan said while delivering the 25th Air Chief Marshal P.C. Lal memorial lecture.

India refused to supply what it considered "offensive weapons" to Sri Lanka and opposed any military solution of the "ethnic conflict" while urging Colombo to devolve autonomy to the minorities.

It's not a surprise thing to Sri Lankans, India has voted against Sri Lanka twice and they will vote against Sri Lanka for the third time too, only country in South Asian region who did that and who will do that in the future. lol

These trend start by Sri Lanka themself.

Personally I believe we should withdraw from SAARC and we should continue our neutral status in the region with the Indian subcontinental countries.

Well India has always eyed the Trincomalee harbor to use. They will loose that opportunity. Now as with the latest development India will loose the oil storage facilities at Trincomalee too.

Between 2000 and 2004, India's exports to Sri Lanka in the last four years increased by 113%, from USD 618 million to $1,319 million while Sri Lankan exports to India increased by 342%, from $44 million to USD $194 million

Indian exports account for 14% of Sri Lanka’s global imports. India is also the fifth largest export destination for Sri Lankan goods, accounting for 3.6% of its exports.

So if India has lost the Sri Lankan market it will affect the Indian economy too.

I think Sri Lanka will be fine until we hit the middle income trap. It's going to take much better research and technology and better universities to get over.

In the short term I think it will remain (aside from the Maldives) the richest country in South Asia per person. Just have to be careful, especially with upcoming US/EU possible sanctions.
