What's new

Sri Lanka does a Maldives, raises excise on Indian vehicles by 73%

Geely is initially considering an assembly line with $ 20 million in shared investment with Micro Cars and 500 new employments in automotive manufacturing at a new plant being planned in Hambantota.

The work on making the factory will start in mid-2013 and Phase I will be completed by end of 2014 to roll-out the first car in January 2015.

......The Minister responding to the executive has expressed hope that Geely will use the Indo-Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA) and Sri Lanka Pakistan Free Trade Agreement to export to the two huge markets from Sri Lanka.

"Geely can expand its exports to other South Asian markets from here thereby contributing to our exports basket, " the Minister has said.

...they are hoping to export these chinese cars to India !!! :partay:

and then to pakistan :cheesy:

And for Pakistanis, Banglas, Nepalis and the Maldivians there seems to be only one ogre - India. Easiest way to no govern effectively and pull wool over the the eyes of their simpleton citizens - blame india

..well now you know how an American feels when the world hates him :enjoy:

Simple truth of this world is ...its better to be feared than be loved. India should work harder on its 'Hard Power' rather than follow the foolish Nehruvian policy of 'soft power'

Wow creating a trade barrier. Sri Lanka will be punished for this. I promise we will make you guys perish in one way or the other.

I don't think it is a good idea to increase the tariff , except for the Chinese company no one is going to set up production line there in SriLanka.. Forget Indian cars even the foreign companies who have production plant in India will find it hard to sale car in SL and I don't think they are going to set up manufacturing plant in SL when they already have one in India...and India being a bigger market will always get the attention and production plants than SL...

Can you in your expert opinion explain this increase in duties on specifically Indian "automobile"? How will it serve the lankan consumers? How will it keep the competitiveness of lankan auto sector?

Actually there is no special duties specially on Indian cars, what government did was increased the tax on smaller engine cars. In the indirect way unfortunately those are mostly India cars such as Maruti. So some one can claim this is taxing against Indian cars, I do not deny that.

Last time Indian Maruti 800cc was around 18 lakhs Rupees, (current price may be 1-2 lakhs more). Maruti consider as a cheap car in here so it will effect to lower middle class people, on the other hand no one going to buy Indian cars at the similar price of Japanese recondition cars. Indian cars are less in our roads, Japanese Toyota is most of people's choice.

don't get mixed up, I have mentioned only export share of SL.
Export share of India is bigger as you have mentioned, that's why I have said any act will boomerang to India back ;)

India's total exports r over $250 billion n our export to SL accounts for less than 2% of total exports(which we aren't gonna lose wholly) while SL imports 22% of its total imports from India n believe me its much more than tomatos n potatos u were talking about...

So its better for both the countries to resolve the matter diplomatically as its for our mutual benefit rather than escalating the matter...:)

Chinese production line in Sri Lank is a farce. What kind of production unit can you set up for 20 million $ ?

They will import partially assembled chinese vehicle parts and chinese labour into Sri Lanka and assemble the car and sell it to gullible Sri Lankans.

.
Dont you think its unfair that only excise of Indian vehicles have been increased while countries like Japan and other Asian countries is having an excise cut??

they dont want to import cheap cars from india, period
