Sri Lanka is further expanding its overseas military deployment in support of the United Nations.

The latest deployment is taking place in newly created South Sudan. SLAF headquarters said that a contingent of 104 personnel including 18 officers would be deployed along with three Mi-17 helicopters of Russian origin early next month.

The forthcoming deployment is the first since the recently concluded presidential election. The UN Security Council in accordance with Resolution 1996 of July 8, 2011 established the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) for an initial period of one year as from July 09, 2011. The UN is continuing with the mission.

This is the second aircraft deployment by SLAF under a UN mandate. The SLAF deployed three Mi 17s along with a ground contingent last September in Central Africa.

SLAF spokesman Wing Commander Gihan Seneviratne yesterday told The Island that vehicles and other equipment had been dispatched, whereas the contingent would accompany the helicopters.

The passing out parade of the contingent was held on Feb. 13 at SLAF Base Katunayake. Air Marshal Kolitha Gunathilleke, the commander of the Air Force took the salute. Contingent commander of the Heli-Deployment, Wing Commander P.A.V. Samantha commanded the parade. The Chief of Staff of the Air Force Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinhala and members of the Air force board of management and other senior officers were also present at the passing out parade.

Among the countries involved in UNMISS are Australia, China, Germany, India, Japan, Norway, Russian Federation, UK, US and Vietnam.

South Sudan has seen sporadic fighting since December 2013 as government forces loyal to President Salva Kiir, a member of the dominant Dinka ethnic group, try to put down a rebellion led by former Vice President Riek Machar, who is of Nuer ethnicity. The fighting has often been along ethnic lines, according to international news agencies.

Sri Lanka accepted its largest ever UN military mission during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s tenure as the Prime Minister. The deployment comprised an infantry battalion of 950 personnel in the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Sri Lanka’s contribution had been further strengthened by deploying a company of 150 personnel to the UN Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in 2010.

At the conclusion of the conflict, the previous government declared that the Sri Lankan military could increase its role in UN missions.

Pointless thread, I'm sorry. What Ranil Wickremasinghe is going to do is to reduce the size of the Sri Lankan armed forces, remove them from the north of the country, let Tamil extremists have a free run and basically turn Sri Lanka into a feckless country that depends entirely on India and the USA.

New Educational facilities for the KDU

The 'KDU CARE' Research Centre and the modernized Medical Centre of the Kotelawala Defence University was ceremonially declared open today (06th Monday, April 2015). Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. BMUD Basnayake graced the event as the chief guest.

The 'KDU CARE' Research Centre had been constructed under the first phase of the six storied Engineering Faculty complex of the KDU.

The Engineering Complex is being constructed in an eco-friendly concept with special attention to utilize natural light and air flow. Once completed this facility would be the first of its kind comprehensive engineering faculty in the country to be built in keeping with the eco-friendly concept. It will house an administrative office, 16 fully equipped laboratories, auditorium, practical activity rooms and other facilities to accommodate 250 students annually.

The 'KDU CARE' Research Centre can be termed as the research wing of the KDU. It includes a state of the art medical laboratory and research facilities.

The Medical Centre has been upgraded with many facilities with separate wards for males and females, emergency treatment unit and modern medical equipment.

Speaking at the event Mr. Basnayake said the KDU has produced many scholars and patriotic citizens who had rendered yeoman service to the nation and that some have made the supreme sacrifice in doing so. Reaffirming the role of the KDU as the national defence university in Sri Lanka he said that it is setting trends and higher standards in tertiary and higher education focusing on defence and security perspectives and the country's political and economic challenges.

He appreciated the success of the KDU in attracting more than 2000 day scholars and foreign students in a short period of time and said that the KDU is fast becoming an international university.

During the event a memento was presented to Mr. Basnayake by the Vice Chancellor of the KDU as a token of appreciation.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Mr. S Hettiarachchi, Chief of Defence Staff General Jagath Jayasuriya, Vice Chancellor of the KDU Major General Milinda Peiris, members of the tutorial staff, tri forces officers and distinguished invitees were present at the occasion

What for?

Why isn't the SL government doing anything about the thousands of Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters? Why have they given the oil tanks to India in Trincomalee for a song? Why are the dismantling army camps in Northern Sri Lanka?

What is Ranil Wickremasinghe doing? Arranging a "diaspora festival" so that those who funded and supported the LTTE can wine and dine at Sri Lanka's expense?

Yahapalanaya is such a winner.

The current Sri Lankan government under Ranil Wickremasinghe (who is prime minister) has been running a hate campaign against China.

Prior to the elections he was screaming and shouting against China, despite the fact that China helped Sri Lanka enormously politically, economically and militarily whilst the war was raging. No other country besides Pakistan has stood behind Sri Lanka so resolutely and yet this puerile, self-obsessed brat deigns it fit to denigrate them in public. Ranil's acolyte Ravi Karunanayake was lambasting the Chinese in interviews to newspapers, on TV and the radio. Ranil Wickremasinghe has a deep seated hatred for China. The countries he adores are the USA and Britain - two countries who tried to do everything they could to stop the war against the LTTE and who have no interest in Sri Lanka's development and prosperity.

Under Ranil's tenure the Sri Lankan armed forces were deciminated. He let the LTTE kill informants and Sri Lankan soldiers with impunity. He let the LTTE surround Sri Lankan army camps and then wanted to hand over more than 1/3 of Sri Lanka's land area and 2/3 of Sri Lanka's coastline to Prabhakaran, all on a silver platter.

When Sri Lanka's security forces were making gains against the LTTE he had the temerity to stand up ridicule them publicly. Absolutely shameful.

None of what I say are "lies."

Ranil Wickremasinghe has been trying to destroy Sri Lanka and come to power for years. He has been rejected over and over again, but like the dicator he is he clings to power and uses every method possible to hold onto the reigns of the United National Party (UNP) and sneak into power in Sri Lanka. He is now PM of Sri Lanka not by being voted into power but by sneaking in the back door. So typical of this low man who is desperately trying to elbow his way up in politics.

He has no love for Sri Lanka's armed forces despite the fact that they were the ones who saved Sri Lanka's unity and territorial integrity. He has time and time again ridiculed and ignored the ordinary soldier and wined and dined with supporters of the LTTE. While Sri Lankan soldiers were being slaughtered by the LTTE during his "ceasefire agreement" he was sending Sri Lankan airforce helicopters to give free rides to the LTTE hierarchy. He was busy providing the finest health care to LTTE cadres at Colombo's private hospitals and even got the then defence minister Austin Fernando to visit them with baskets of goodies.

This man Ranil Wickremasinghe is a complete and utter joke. A man with an ego of portentous size. A puppet of the west who is desperately trying to hold the reigns of power in Sri Lanka.

More to be pitied are people who ran away from Sri Lanka.

Same for those who lived it up under the colonials in Sri Lanka and then did a dump and run when their life of priviledge was coming to an end.
