3. We had selected 195 PA officers to face trial for what they did in BD. The trials were to follow Nuremberg and Tokyo models. For this purpose relevant international agencies were contacted and instructions were issued to appointed prosecutors and BD military officers. Their prison cells were prepared. I myself was involved in the process from Army HQ. Late Attorney Genl Aminul Huq was also in the team. A DIG War Crimes Tribunal was set up in an abandoned hose near the lake at the end of RD # 3/4, DRA. Again India frustrated our efforts by refusing to hand over these POWs to us - and by eventually allowing them to go back home.
As much as we disagree and have contempt for each other, Saab, I will have to 100% agree with you on this one.
India should not have been in such a rush to allow these POWs to go back to Pakistan, especially those wanted by Bangladesh for war crimes trials.
A big monumental blunder by I.G that is a shameful one in India's history. I can see why that initial disgust was put in you for India (North Indians especially since they dominated the political and military back then and still do to a large extent) which as since unforunately expanded and taken deep control of you. I can thus empathise and can only offer my own personal regret and distaste for what was done.....I still do not understand why. It severely undermined the justice for the genocide and its victims. I cannot forgive India for what was done here, what it could have meant for India - BAN relations....why did we still have such a soft spot for Pakistan military. A big big defeat for the conscience of Bangladesh and India.
I feel with the diplomatic umbrella afforded by the USSR, India could have definitely cooperated fully with Bangladesh's demands and done a full nuremberg style for P.A criminals....and probably got other concessions from Pakistan too (although these trials should have been the bare unnegotiable minimum).
Can you please give us any more such insight/opinion on this matter (if possible) since you are a veteran and was actually there. I am compiling information regarding 1971 war from Bangladeshi perspective.
