Vanya Shivashankar of Olathe might have become co-champion of the 88th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday. But her proud dad won Twitter’s praise with the T-shirt he wore for the big occasion.

Mirle Shivashankar’s shirt declared him “The Beefather.”

That’s no empty boast for Mirle, a software engineer. Vanya, 13, became the first sibling of a past champion to win the bee. Her sister, Kavya, won in 2009.

Two for two. Not bad, dad.

Vanya shared the championship with 14-year-old Gokul Venkatachalam from Chesterfield, Mo., on her fifth and final attempt at the title.

Education system is changing in India for good. Plus there is more focus as people understand the imp of education. I think this is one of the strong points of countries like China. India seems to slowly following them.

Education system is changing in India for good. Plus there is more focus as people understand the imp of education. I think this is one of the strong points of countries like China. India seems to slowly following them.

china too has memorization-based "education" which is why in most cases china has failed to innovate... their focus on building factories and building nationalism instead of global communism has taken away radical thinking from them and made them a follower of technological design mostly, rather than leader.

take for instance their "loongson" microprocessor, which though manufactured in china, is really a american design ( mips architecture ).

another is their space program, which was innovative and advanced in the 70's but now is basically based on copying russian design... they may be building their own space station but it is nothing radical.

further, their economic system especially since in the last 15 years has become more capitalist than western nations, as i see it... consumerism has taken over.

education should be real and lead to great good effects upon society as well as produce technological innovation.

Kindly note the Indians in the West be it Europe or America are 1st Generation Migrants or Children of these First Generation Immigrants. Hence they are the direct representatives India, they can be anyone by Nationality but they are Representatives of Indian Genes.
