Spain offers used engines for railways

ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: Pakistan has agreed in principle to accept the offer made by Spain for the purchase of used rolling stock to help meet the deficiency of locomotives currently being faced by the railways.
As a first step, Spain is likely to supply a few locomotives, which would be tested by Pakistan Railways to assess their quality and functioning potential.

Spanish Ambassador in Pakistan Gonzalo Maria Quintero Saravia held a meeting with Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour in Islamabad on Monday and suggested that a team of experts from Pakistan Railways should visit Spain to evaluate the used rolling stock being offered.

Responding to the offer Mr Bilour suggested that a team of Spanish experts should visit Pakistan in advance to carry out an assessment of needs of Pakistan Railways and devise the future strategy.

He further suggested the Spanish government should invest capital to improve Pakistan’s rail infrastructure, which has great potential for investment.

Informed sources told Dawn that the Spanish offer of used rolling stock was under active consideration of the ministry.

Pakistan Railways GM operations Ashfaq Khattak told the Spanish envoy that railways would welcome six locomotives for a period of ninety days for test run. “Once the railways is satisfied with the working of the Spanish locomotives, we would be in a position to sign an agreement for negotiating a deal for more used rolling stock from Spain,” he said.

The countrywide rail operations both passenger and goods services have been severely hampered due to the lack of locomotives, which forced Pakistan Railways to shrink its service by suspending a dozen of train services.

Mr Bilour informed the Spanish envoy that Pakistan’s whole railway system was running on 160 engines whereas more 400 engines are needed to meet actual needs. Secretary Railways Shahid Hussain Raja said that the railway urgently needs 300 to 400 locomotives because most of the engines are out of service.

I thought Pakistan Railways was using the Chinese Diesel Locomotives along with the older GE ones from US earlier. Are they being phased out?
I am assuming the Spanish locos are diesel ones.

What kind of Track gauge is used by Pakistan Railways. Here in India we use Broad Gauge 1.676 m and in Spain it is quite close 1.668 m

I guess Pakistan would also be using the Broad gauge so that the Spanish Locos can be used with minor modifications, otherwise it would be a big headache converting the gauge.

I think Pakistan also uses the same broad gauge tracks since they were part of the same railways system from British Era.
Yes you are right regards the conversion of the engines for adapting minor gauge changes. Most locos and coaches can support minor modifications on gauge width.

not a bad idea to explore spanish option knowing that chinease engines didnt quite suit our needs

Spain has an excellent Railway network and if I am not mistaken some of the new coaches for Delhi Airport Metro line are coming from Spain.

oh well there is no harm in buying used engines if they have some service life left and are not that expensive either. We have tested chinese engines in past, and disappointed. May be not a bad idea to buy used/new engines from Spain, Germany or UK if they are affordable and serve the purpose

No, thanks. Already pathetic Chinese engines and bogies are causing damage to rail tracks and an extra burden due to their heavy maintenance required. Used engines will require heavy maintenance as usual.

Should have bought from the Americans. Those two generals and the crooked GM finance have ruined PR's fate for a long time.

Well he did turned around the Indian Railways from Rs 400 Cr loss a year to Rs 10000 Cr Profit in his 5 Yrs term without even Hiking the Passenger rate

How ever i dont think people in pak would be able to understand his language considering that many People here in India find it Difficult to understand his style of hindi/bhojpuri /english:partay::partay::partay::D:D:D:lol::lol::lol:

PR to purchase 50 locomotives from S Korea

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Railways is considering purchasing e of used General Motors 3000 Horse Power Locomotives from South Korea aimed at meeting the shortfall of locomotives in the Railways network.

According to a senior official of the Ministry of Railways, the proposal to purchase 50 used locomotives from South Korea is under consideration and almost at final stage as the Korean Railways is also interested to supply used General Motors 3000 Horse Power Locomotives to the Pakistan Railways at an attractive price.

Prior to the commencement of the pilot project a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the Ministry of Railways and Korail, a Korean Company on behalf of the two governments, he told. Initially, a pilot project of six locomotives would be started for conversion of bogie truck from Standard Gauge to Broad Gauge. On successful completion of field trial of three months of these locomotives on the PR network, the railways would finalise the demand of remaining 44 locomotives along with one year’s performance guarantee and five 5 years technical support. Once the cost per locomotive would be determined through negotiations, Korean Joint Venture would consider deferred payments for a period of eighteen months after the locomotives are put into operations on Pakistan Railways network.

It may be mentioned here that Pakistan Railways has already purchased locomotives from China in the past and also considering purchase of further locomotives from China for strengthening the Railways system in the country.

Used Locomotives that too 3000 HP (Horse Power) only :what: :what:

Instead of moving forward they want to go backward, Pakistan railways can buy Locomotives from Indian railways which presently using 5000 HP, 5400 HP and 6000 HP freight and passenger Locomotives and we are going to replace them with 7000 HP (indigenous) and 9000 HP/12000 HP (imported from Japan.)

It will be cheaper, reliable option that can be delivered via established rail links between India-pak.
