I didn't get you. How a 20km SA range be translated into 50km AA range? Spada 2000 is a SAM version of Aspide MK-1 that has a max range of 20km. There is no Aspide with a 50km range. There were plans for Aspide Mk-2 with 60km range, but MK-2 never materilized.
...

OK, quoted missile ranges are very erratic, specially for AAMs since launch altitude changes them a great deal among other reasons.

The ranges below are approximations. Comapare:

MICA: 50 km as AAM, 15 km as SAM
Aspide/Sparrow: 55 km as AAM, 15 km as SAM
Sidewinder: 20 km as AAM, 8 km as SAM
Amraam: 60 km as AAM, about 15+ km as SAM

Here's a link that states ranges for both AAM and SAM Aspide. It's only FAS but still...:
Aspide Mk1/Mk2

When you're using an AAM missile as a SAM, it needs to get off the ground from 0 initial speed, faces maximal air drag, and burns fuel to gain altitude; things that the corresponding AAM hasn't to contend with. And the SAM usually (e.g. Spada's missiles) has a heavier warhead.

As shehbazi said, Aspide 2k is an improved missile. Bigger motor, bigger warhead, greater speed, more independent control planes and maybe an improved seeker. Its not the Aspide planes carried under their wings.

Yeah its only a low altitude, short range system; but remember its replacing the lowest tier non-MANPAD SAM we have. The one disadvantage over the Crotale will be the reduced mobility, something very undesirable these days with enemy SEAD capabilities at stand-off ranges.

A google search reveals that Spada 2000 does not use Aspide Mk1, rather it uses Aspide 2000.

Indeed, however, the range is still 20km. At best, Spada 2000 is a point defence low-medium range system.

Kuwait had already the baseline Aspide system and in March 2007, it ordered upgrade to Spada 2000 standard that use Aspide 2000 missile. Kuwait seems to have inducted Aspide in 2000. Kuwait also has PATRIOT SAM system. "Plus" in Spada 2000 Plus indicates that some more modifications/upgrading has been done for PAF.

Yeh, well I dont know if Kuwait can be taken as an example. They have their needs, and we have our own array of challenges.

Yeah its only a low altitude, short range system; but remember its replacing the lowest tier non-MANPAD SAM we have.

Very true indeed. What else is left to say.

It would be of more use if we were going to buy them with ToT, which I believe is not the case.

Many thanks to Allah Almighty for this system.

Hi,

I just read someone question ground to air range compared to air to air range ---why different---it is simple physics---for the same weight of fuel and same missile---it burns more fuel for it to take off from ground---ie 0 to 3000 km per hour and also going up against gravity-----

Remember a loaded aircraft burns almost 1/3 rd to 1/2 or more of its fuel just on take off to cruising altitude---would the missile use more than half fuel to reach at cruising altitude and accelerate---well in flight the missile is already travelling at 350---450 knots attached to the aircraft---there are so many opther variables---why an air to air missile go 70 km.

Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, inaugurated the `Missile Maintenance Complex' at a PAF Base in Karachi. PAF statement said that the Complex is a significant enhancement of PAF's engineering capability to support various missile systems. During the inaugural address, the CAS appreciated the personnel involved in the project for their professionalism and hard work to complete it within short time. The CAS hoped the complex would further strengthen PAF's defence capabilities.

The Spada 2000 is produced by the Italian-controlled part of the firm, MBDA Italia, and used by Italy and Spain. The system provides air defence missile coverage of 2,000km². The Aspide 2000 missiles can intercept crossing and approaching targets to a range of 25km. The kill probability is high, even against highly agile crossing targets. The system can engage up to four targets simultaneously with Aspide missiles.Spada 2000 Plus will replace the old French Crotale air defence systems.Up to 10 light anti-air weapons can be managed by the system in addition to its Firing Sections by SPADA 2000 system . Aspide 2000's radar is the Selex Sistemi Integrati (formerly Alenia Marconi Systems) RAC-3D, which gives three-dimensional volumetric air surveillance, detection and tracking. The system has the capacity to track 100 targets simultaneously within a range of 60km.

Spada 2000 was evaluated by the PAF officials in 2006 and was selected for acquisition defeating Raytheon SL-AMRAAM and German Diehl BGT IRIS-t SL air defence systems. Ten batteries of Spada 2000 air defense system worth $656.56 million will be delivered to Pakistan Air Force before August 2012.

Blain can you please add whether targets were shot down in jamming conditions or whether the targets were maneuvering.............

A SAM battery's forte must be resistance to jamming and some countermeasures to anti-radiation weapons. From previous conflicts, we know that SAM batteries face SEAD/DEAD aircraft first or face Escort Jammers before the arrival of strike package.

Therefore if a SAM battery can function in jamming conditions AND can deal with Anti-radiation missiles, then it has some deterrence value. Now the difficulty lies in the fact that latest jamming technology is secret and we dont always know the latest jamming techniques but still its possible to test the SAM radars against known jamming techniques.

For the anti-radiation missiles that home on back-lobes and side-lobes of a radar, its not easy to escape the attack. If SPADA has some tricks to counter this threat, then it may become headache for an aggressor.

According to MBDA, the system is capable of protecting of vital assets from air attacks conducted in a dense ECM and clutter environment, including PGM and tactical mizzies.

What type of config? Truck/mobile or trailer/container mounted?
