it's about being a responsible power, no need to pollute space when you can easily and accurately simulate it after having launched satellites in space, GSAT-6 most recently. The world has stopped testing nukes too, right ?

Also got to keep in mind that the situation wrt China is very different, despite being married by commercial trade, the US still maintains an arms embargo on China, and a huge military presence in Japan, Taiwan, RoK, there have been recent face offs in the SCS too, so there is a military rivalry there. India can't afford to piss people off needlessly, we have limited range ICBMs for the same reason.

Militarily, India are a very distant third to Russia and China, we're a poor country too, can't afford to go balls-out and play the great game.

But not testing ICBM, ASAT and Thermonuclear weapons (hydrogen bombs) just to avoid America getting angry, well that's quite a compromise.

China's very first Thermonuclear test in the 1960's was 3.3 megatons.

India's test is nowhere near to the range of a Thermonuclear weapon, not even close. Not even close to boosted fission. It indicates a very basic fission weapon.

Given that these are doubts about India's one and only thermo-nuclear test, do we need more tests?

The thermo-nuclear test, the fission test and the sub-kilotonne test all worked as designed. They are diverse. In terms of detailed design, their content is quite different. So, we think the design done is validated and within this configuration which has been tested, one can build devices ranging from low kt all the way to 200 kt. And that fully assures the deterrence.

It's called scaling dummy. The design of the 45 kt test was always to be 200 kt in its final version. A 45 kt test is roughly 50% of a US W76 warhead on a trident missile.

Again, India's largest test was only 20 kt (though claimed to be 45 kt).

It was 45 kt. The seismo reports that claimed 25 kt refused to take into account either the de coupled arrangement of the warhead or it being buried in sand or other material creating greater muffling of the blast. International seismographs have only so much accuracy with subterranean tests given lack of information about the specific geology and conditions immediately surrounding the test regarding the shaft, placement etc. I don't know where you are pulling the 20 kt number from, the initial raw data suggested 25kt because of the factors I just mentioned.

You think Mao cared about any famine? He would easily see 100's of millions of his countrymen starve to death and resort to things like cannibalism....rather than lose face or lose a conflict of any sort.

Its ok we got our revenge for 62 in 67. Plus we still hold onto South Tibet (which you claim and are too chicken to "seize" - Indian occupied China if you will :p:)

So now you resort to bullying countries less than 10% your size and still do a crap job at it (they are still sticking their tongue out at you and daring you to enforce you entire claim....all the while bringing in oil rigs and the likes). I mean shouldn't that offshore oil belong to China? You are losing out man! Do something!

no need for a very long range ICBM test, that range can be extended easily, and as already mentioned, we have thermonuclear devices and delivery systems operational.

so not a compromise when our only real threats are within range.

to avoid angering the Americans is a geopolitical reality, almost a rule that everyone has to play by (barring Russia and China of course). For India, it mostly only applies when it comes to testing strategic weapons systems such as ICBMs and ASAT, for the rest, India outright refused to be part of any sanctions on Russia and bought oil from Iran all through the sanctions. Not a NATO stooge, not in any anti US block either.. not a bad place to be.

What's the point of not testing something?

Would you buy a car that has never been tested? How about a multi-billion dollar missile project?

Any nation that can build and launch satellites, can make a ASAT platform. All you need is a active radar homing terminal guidance, and a terminal cryogenic thrust engine.
