South Sudan agrees to Egyptian request for military base near Pagak

June 2, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan government has agreed to Egyptian request to build a military base in Pagak, a former opposition stronghold that lies in the country’s Maiwut County of Upper Nile state, military sources at Bilpam said Tuesday.

The base, one high-ranking military official said, will house around 250 Egyptian troops in an apparent preparation for all the eventualities on a construction of a mega-dam by Ethiopia whose terms of implementation are opposed by Egypt.

“The government of the Republic of South Sudan and the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) have agreed to allocate a land to our Egyptian brothers who have requested a piece of land in the east [of South Sudan] to put their troops who will help in the development of the country,” the official said on condition of anonymity.


Another official separately told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) from the ministry of foreign affairs that the land will only be used for developmental purposes which Egypt has pledged to provide to the world’s youngest nation.

“The land will be used by the Egyptians to provided development which are badly needed by the Republic of South Sudan,” the source said.

“The only country on Africa which has been on our side for the last decade since we gained our independence is Egypt. They are continuing to provide us with the services that our people need,” the official added.

I think it's a great move. We need to help our Sudanese brothers and sisters. Just like the official said, it only makes sense that the country that has been on its side since it gained its independence would be the one to help it move in the right direction, knowing how involved the military is with all types of commercial projects, it makes all the sense in the wolrd.

The base, if the news are correct will be a long-term pressure in the event of non-compliance with the water quotas agreement, but there is no current intention to destroy the dam at the present time, or these news wouldn't have leaked about the base..

Sisi has proven that he is a calm, patient person who is not one of the too talkative leaders, but he walks with calculated and studied steps and can reach what he wants. And this is a long call, if the news is true, it will constitute a shock to many, because Egypt has not shown or announced any action or reaction to the dam for years, despite the Ethiopian provocations..

What is for sure is that the relations between Egypt and South Sudan are the strongest in Africa between Egypt and any other country .. and Egyptian aid to southern Sudan is more than generous and successful in the fields of energy, health and education ..

problem solved. it would be extremely foolish for Egypt to try and use force against Ethiopia on this issue. looking at it in a neutral fair sense, its hard not to agree with ethiopias position.

there are many treaties regarding the Nile water signed before and after the colonial era ....

It ends by 2015 agreement ( No colonial power at that time , isn’t it? ) between Egypt , Sudan and Ethiopia not to start using the dam except after full agreement between the 3 parties.


Worth to say 2 things:
1- If we will not follow the agreements during the colonial era , then the boarders agreements will fall as well .... then the entire Sudan including the area where the dam itself located will belong to Egypt .

2- If we talk fair , we must consider all other water resources in the country during the agreements to use the Nile water .... Ethiopia has about 1000 BCM of raining water / year .... but Egypt rely by 90% on that 55.5 BCM of the Nile ..... knowing that Ethiopia is taking provocative actions against all it’s neighbors and built a dam and blocked the water of a common river between Ethiopia and Kenya.... several fights against Eritrea and just a few days ago the Ethiopian army entered Northern Sudanese land protecting Ethiopian farmers raids on Sudanese ... and a Sudanese Army officer killed while defending his land ...

Great news if true. Means that the Egyptian general intelligence is doing its work very well, and this may explain the Egyptian refusal to pursue with the negotiations as requested by the Ethiopians as it was only a way to waste more time. The first step was raising the issue to the security council (UNSC), other steps are yet to come.

Water is coming from Allah since thousands and thousands of years to all nations of river Nile basin. You can build a dam to benefit from water, but you can not block the majority of water suddenly and let other nations suffer for your favors. We also, we have nothing to do with any kind of old or new treaties when it comes to our lives.
