South Korea offers building nuclear reactors in India

NEW DELHI: Signalling an end to the Fukushima gloom that overhung the global nuclear sector, South Korea has offered to build nuclear reactors in India and sought land for the project.

The move is significant on another count too - it indicates a renewed interest in the Indian nuclear power sector with the impending resolution of the Kudankulam crisis.

New Delhi, in turn, is likely to launch Korean satellites , adding South Korea to a clientele that includes Israel , Switzerland, the Netherlands and Algeria. Emerging from talks with president Lee Myung-bak in Seoul, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "India has offered to launch Korean satellites on Indian space launch vehicles."

A joint statement said, "The two leaders proposed that the concerned agencies of both countries study the possible cooperation in future space activities, including launching a nano-satellite developed by Korean students on an Indian launch vehicle."

Korea, in many ways, rewrote nuclear history a few years ago by winning a contract to build reactors in the UAE, undercutting French giant Areva. Given the delays in working out a nuclear deal with Japan, which is holding up deals with France among others, some quarters in India feel Korean reactors could be the answer.

India has supported the South on the issue of North Korea, weighing in against Pyongyang's plans to launch an "application satellite" .

Real South Koreans like Dr. Chung Kiyul care little of India, but unfortunately the Lee regime is pro-India. He is evicting and imprisoning Koreans while lining his own pocket with construction kickbacks to make room on Jeju Island, the former Island of World Peace, for an air base that doesn't even belong to his country.

I think India should build its own reactors now they have enough experience in making a sub reactor.

But how many can we build at one time, India has plans for 20 more,

Your post makes little sense here with relevance to the topic

PM gives Korean firms six reasons to invest in India

A domestic savings rate of 33-35 per cent of GDP and growing,
A very young population, with half of the working population in its twenties,
Heavy investments in education, health and agriculture to give a new deal to rural India. Rural markets are booming and the middle class is growing rapidly.
Huge expansion in higher education and skills and development of ports, airports, railways, energy and roads. India is poised to continue to be a frontline player in the global knowledge economy.
Ambitious plans for the development of physical infrastructure. Planning to secure investment of almost $1 trillion in the next five years in new projects in highways, power plants, mass transport systems, ports and airports. This will be achieved through both public and private investment and Public-Private Partnerships.
Determined to pursue a strategy of green growth. Committed to increasing energy efficiency and the share of renewables, including solar and nuclear power, in the energy mix. There will be large business opportunities and I am aware of Korean capabilities in environmentally friendly technologies.

May be India should request partnership with Korea in Electronics sector! Open up many more R&D and manufacturing sectors in India... We cannot import all electronics from China!

We make our own reactors. We have 3 designs of PHWR's (220/300 MW, 500/540 MW & 700 MW). Six 700 MW indigenous reactors are under construction. Moreover, the first FBR is also under construction in Kalpakkam. What India is trying to get from other countries are designs for LWR's. Once we get our hands on that technology, we will start building our own LWR designs (2030 onwards).

What's more, add the thorium reactors that've already been put to test these days. Once it comes out, we'd be able to export reactors as well as massive thorium fuel.

But we should take the South Korean offer. We need plants in excess of 1,000 MW capacity; something which we're not adept at right now. Not at least with all the red tapism and nepotism that we have in all our strategic circles. So while we refine our technology, we can let the Koreans establish nuke plants for us at a fast pace.

WE need the plants badly man; power cut after 62 years of independence is unacceptable.
