South Korea is eyeing a deal to buy 120 F-16s

There seems to some problem with the article.

Korean Air? Airbus for F-16???

Seoul (AFP) - Korean Air and European aerospace giant Airbus have signed an agreement to jointly bid for an $8-billion fighter jet project, a company spokesman said Sunday, pitting the pair against a Lockheed Martin, Korea Aerospace Industries team-up.

The project is designed to develop and produce 120 F-16 fighter jets to replace the country's ageing fleet of F-4s and F-5s.

.
Why does ROK want to buy old aircraft when they are already working on their own KAI-XX program? Not to mention, why haven't they opted for F-35 series which could ideally replace the jet?

South Korea could definitely use more F-16s but there is one problem that I see with this deal.

Airbus didn't develop the F-16. The intellectual and production rights of the F-16 belong to Lockheed Martin. Why would the Americans let the Europeans poach a lucrative contract such as this?

This article is very vague and doesn't make the slightest sense. :tdown:o_O

So what is the status of your KAI-XX fighter jet development program with Turkey and Indonesia?
