SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean fired warning shots after a Russian military plane violated South Korea’s airspace on Tuesday, Seoul officials said, in the first such incident between the countries.

Three Russian military planes initially violated South Korea’s aerial identification zone off its east coast before one of them entered the country’s territorial sky, the South’s Defense Ministry said.

South Korean fighter jets then scrambled to the area to fire warning shots, a ministry official said, requesting anonymity due to department rules.

The Russian plane left the area but it returned and violated the South Korean airspace again later Tuesday, the ministry official said. He said the South Korean fighter jets fired warning shots again.

It was the first time a Russian military plane violated South Korean airspace, according to South Korean officials.

The three Russian planes had violated the South Korean aerial identification zone with two Chinese military planes. But it wasn’t immediately known whether the two countries deliberated did so, according to the South Korean official.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry said it plans to summon Russian and Chinese Embassy officials later Tuesday to register formal protests.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean warplanes fired hundreds of warning shots at a Russian military aircraft that entered South Korean airspace on Tuesday, defense officials in Seoul said, with Chinese bombers also entering South Korea’s air defense identification zone.

It was the first time a Russian military aircraft had violated South Korean airspace, an official at the Ministry of National Defence in Seoul said.

Two Russian bombers and two Chinese bombers entered the Korea Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ) together early on Tuesday, the defense ministry said.

A separate Russian early warning and control aircraft later twice violated South Korean airspace over Dokdo - an island that is occupied by South Korea and also claimed by Japan, which calls it Takeshima - just after 9 a.m. (midnight GMT Monday), according to the South Korean military.

There was no immediate public comment from Russia. China’s foreign ministry did not respond immediately to a Reuters request for comment.

South Korea’s top security adviser Chung Eui-yong lodged a strong objection with Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of the Security Council of Russia on Tuesday, asking the council to assess the incident and take appropriate action, South Korea’s presidential office said.

“We take a very grave view of this situation and, if it is repeated, we will take even stronger action,” Chung said, according to South Korea’s presidential office.


South Korea’s Foreign Ministry plans to summon acting Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Maxim Volkov and Chinese Ambassador Qiu Guohong on Tuesday to lodge a stern protest and strongly urge them to prevent a recurrence, ministry spokesman Kim In-chul said.

The Russian aircraft was an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft, an official at South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said, and South Korea scrambled F-15 and F-16 fighter jets in response to the intrusions.

The South Korean jets fired around 360 rounds of ammunition during the incident, the JCS official said.

“The South Korean military took tactical action including dropping flares and firing warning shots,” the defense ministry said.


A South Korean defense official told Reuters that the Russian aircraft did not respond in any threatening way.

The Russian aircraft left South Korean airspace but then entered it again about 20 minutes later, prompting the South Koreans to fire more warning shots.

The ministry said South Korean warplanes “conducted a normal response” to the incursion, without giving further details.

China and Russia are testing combined offensive doctrine they made for Japan and korea . their main target is always american forces and gathering data on american high value assets like stealth bombers.

Most likely they were testing response times and radar signature locks on american systems.

Looks like they circuled around south korea all of it. From both sides.

Well Russia took Crimea and chunks of Georgia and China took South China sea and tried to take Doklam from India so they're already involved in this shady biz of claiming more vulnerable, available territories but fiercly protecting theirs. smh

ADIZ are self designated area where the air force is tasked in identifying all threats in the air. Commercial aircraft are to ID themselves for their own safety, while non-commercial aircraft entering the zone who fails to ID themselves will require fighter to be scrambled to ID them. Whether they will ID themselves or require fighter interception to be IDed, the zone itself has no legal statue, and aircraft from any country can enter and leave the zone as anything outside of the 12nm boundary are still international airspace.
Looking at the S. Korean's ADIZ, large part of it are actually inside N.Korea's border, and that is more than ridiculous.

You used a terrible example. You should have said: why does China also fire warning shots on planes into its AIZ? Remember, if you want to argument sensibly, you should use the examples that are comparable.
