If not for the resource draining civil war in Sri Lanka, they would have become the first developed country in South Asia. With a relatively small population of 20 million - about as many people as Bombay - and fairly high literacy rate, it is unfortunate that they were slowed down by their civil war. But they will still be the first developed nation in South Asia. Afghanistan is a complete basket case. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh won't be developed for quite a few decades. They breed like rabbits and are plagued by social ills. Bhutan and Nepal have a good chance.

another talk about PPP, PPP is a joke

Balls it is a joke,

You come to my wife's village.

we wll give some great food, great weather, great drinking water(better than any mineral water),food from vegetables with no preservatives/fertilizers,fresh country chicken with no steroids boosted fat,
all this in less than five dollars.

Or you can go to a resort and do all this and eat bad food, bottled water and pay 1000 dollars for the same.

This is PPP for you.

The only country which is falling behind is India. They need to bring 52% of their population out of primitive agri sector first before thinking of anything else like GDP and lab lab lab la.......

approximately 20 to 25 years before 70% Indian population was employed in agri sector

today that number has fallen to 45%

this number will be further reduced

and currently India is suffering from Policy Paralysis

but even then its annual GDP growth rate will be 6 to 6.5% in 2012 according to experts

we have much better, much larger industrial capacity and much bigger economic base than all other south Asian nations

nations with bigger economic base tend to have comparatively lower growth rate

ex.> in early 1990s Indian GDP growth rate was 11%(average) and since last 2 years it is 6 to 7%

but now our economic base is 4.5 to 5 times larger, than that in 1991-92

so once reforms are introduced and decision on FDI is taken (which will be taken in this moth,as sources tell) our growth rate will be back to very good from good :)

Agro needs to be improved but not through employing 52% of entire population. Heard of Machines?

Do you think South Asia is America. We need to increase per hectare crop yield, improving irrigation facilities and make more barren land into agriculture purpose. More Machines will cause more unemployment.

@ALOk31

Sri Lanka is ahead of India in terms of all overall infrastructure.

GCI_overall infrastructure

Sri Lanka score : 4.72

India score : 3.79

dude,Srilanka is a small country.

Most of India's forests are in those places with low development indicators but so what?

You think we should destroy those forests and build stuff there just to beat some indicator?

.
They fact they are landlocked, and will be drawn into regional influence competition makes it difficult for them.

Nepal and Bhutan with their relative small size and low population density only to create a brilliant tourism industry and they will see their economies soar.

Forest land is 23% of land area in India, whereas it is 3% in Pakistan and almost negligible in Bangladesh, don't know about Sri Lanka.

Of course won't deny its easier for Sir Lanka because of its size.

However, I think you didn't check that link, over all infrastructure includes, electricity, roads, telephones all.

I'm not interested in destroying the forest , but improving the logistics and infrastructure there , such as roads , which can benfit forest based industries very well.

Also one of the reason why Naxals/Maoists are well dug up there is because of bad infrastructure impeding governance and security forces from achieving their objectives.

bro i already told u search u tube video u easily find bhilai video.:coffee: bhilai is only manufucter of railway track in india by the way i only ask u simple question how many steel plant in ur tiny island have or ur country only depend of foriegn assistance and tourism .i have no problem with with sri lanka but i don't like when some big mo#th sri lankan try to compare their tiny island with india .

Foreign assistance

Sri Lanka is highly dependent on foreign assistance, and several high-profile assistance projects were launched in 2003. The most significant of these resulted from an aid conference in Tokyo in June 2003; pledges at the summit, which included representatives from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Japan, the European Union and the United States, totalled $4.5 billion.

We have to take a look at India and see which areas and backward and need impetus.

Thats most important and from what i see it is the Bimaru states and some new states.

Boss,Srilanka is an amazing place and all is ok,but u go see the resources they have the tourism they have.

Last of all, they are a little island man.Your issues an dtheirs are not the same.
